To the Editor:

When my family came to Cochise County in the early 1870s it was pretty unsettled and often lawless. Much blood was spilled over land and water rights. Many hearty pioneers stayed and tamed the West, building our wonderful state using laws rather than violence to sort out their land and water issues.

Reference letter “Be wary of Tombstone repairs, published Jan. 2”

Tombstone does have operational wells to augment its water supply when the aqueduct cannot produce enough water, but it costs the city approximately $5,000 a month to operate each well. For a small town that is struggling financially, that’s a lot of money. The aqueduct on the other hand is totally gravity driven and there are no pumps along its entire course.

Fed up with what officials say are unnecessary delays, the city of Tombstone wants a federal judge to clear the way for repairs to its damaged water system in the Huachuca Mountains.

TUCSON, AZ (December 26, 2011) – On December 22, Coronado National Forest Supervisor Jim Upchurch signed a letter authorizing the City of Tombstone to complete additional repairs to their water system in the Huachuca Mountains on the Sierra Vista Ranger District.  The work is authorized from the Forest Boundary to ¼ mile above, or west of, Gardner Spring, in the Miller Peak Wilderness.
