Campus gun idea gets mixed reaction
SIERRA VISTA — As the debate heats up on whether to allow guns on university and community college campuses, some students and faculty members at University of Arizona South shared their thoughts Wednesday.
Associated Students of the University of Arizona South have not researched or discussed the issue enough to take an official stance, President Andrés Gabaldón said. “But personally, I don’t think guns solve any problems in our society.”

This discussion was open a few weeks ago, and in light of the recent shooting
by an Alabama Professor, there are still mixed feelings on guns on campus. I
have spend 15 years in the Army as a drill in combat arms, and currently 16
years with the university and stand by the fact, guns should not be allowed
under no circumstance in the classroom. This is not just my opinion, but
others that work in this community feel the same way. People have loosely
quoted stats which are often inaccurate. Many crimes in America do go
unreported, such as crimes in the inner cities, crimes committed behind the
badge, etc. Once we as Americas face reality, and come to some truth that we
need to make a change to policies and how we abuse are freedom, the safer we
will be. Again, leave guns in the hands of the military and law agencies.
Did the police save those five people when the murderer came a callin’? No?
Did the police DO ANYTHING to benefit those 5 people who were exposed to the
murderer while unarmed? No? Were the police there when the murderer decided
to ignore any “No Guns Allowed” signs as well as THE LAWS AGAINST MURDER
AND ASSAULT? No? So who WAS there when the “Harvard educated”
brother-killer decided to “change” those 5 lives? ONLY THE MURDERER and
THE INTENDED VICTIMS, the police were nowhere to be seen. So as an
“instructor” how does your “The more helpless you are when a murderer
comes callin’, the safer you are” work to keep you safe? If guns are such
a bad idea: why should the military be armed, and more importantly why should
the police be armed if the individual citizens should not?
“Again, leave guns in the hands of the military and law agencies.” You forgot
to add “and criminals,” right Ikester? The law enforcement folks can’t be
everywhere all the time and most often are not on the scene until scores have
been murdered. Therefore, someone has to fill the security gap.
My friend is a policeman in SF. When he does the street beat, he carries 3
guns: his service revolver, his back-up gun, and a throw away. Why the throw
away? The throw away is something they use in the event there they shoot a
person by mistake. How can one shoot someone by mistake? The cop doing a
street beat knows he is in a “war zone.” In a war zone, one makes super quick
judgment calls on whether the guy is armed and whether the cops life is on
the line. If you think this super quick decision is made rationally or
calculatedly, you are wrong. The throw away is planted if an error is made.
Errors are made whether they are skilled or trained well. These things happen
when crimes are being committed. We have wr zones in SV too!
If I were walking behind you and your loved one on campus, suddenly your
loved one goes down and is not breathing. 9-1-1 is called; but your loved one
ISN’T BREATHING NOW! I’ve only taken the Red Cross CPR course, but that
silly little course doesn’t make me an EMT and certainly didn’t give me
the qualifications of a doctor! Besides, my Red Cross certification card
expired last month. If you knew the above: would you want me to perform CPR
on your loved one; or wait for “a trained professional”? How does it make
sense in an “active shooter in the classroom” situation to “wait for
trained professionals”, when EACH MINUTE represents 4 deaths and waiting
for the “professionals” HAS BEEN PROVEN TO COST DOZENS OF LIVES? While
armed teachers/students in such situations have taken NO INNOCENT LIVES, not
even in Israel where it’s been proven effective against terrorist attacks
on their school children for over 20 years. If you disagree that’s fine:
Wheres ARMED intended victims made it worse?
I am far more afraid of fat filled hamburgers than I am of some criminal with
a handgun. With that being said I support legal carrying per the Second
Amendment. Stop for a second people, gun related mass killings ONLY occur
where no guns are allowed. But hamburgers cause heart disease and it is the
top killer in the nation…I say we ban hamburgers and bring back legal carry
everywhere!
Although the debate continues, I want my right to defend myself and family
against a home invader or Anywhere else we are endangered . No one knows if
the person who broke into your home is armed. Therefore, the homeowner,
including me, has a right to incapacitate that intruder. This principle of
self-defense applies anywhere whether one is a teacher or whatever.
Considering the times we are in, one has to defend ones self, family and
others instead of laying down and be killed. I want my rights whether there
are objections to that or not and I will not patronize businesses that deny
me my rights.
There is NO evidence that shows that campuses would be any safer with a bunch
of armed and lossely trained vigilante militias. Allowing guns on campus
allows the crazy people to get on campus easier with guns, because if guns
are allowed, nobody will say anything. Right now if someone carries a gun on
campus, people will stop them when they see them and at least report them.
The law makers are right to vote this measure down.
You should be named IM4SALVERY
That is what you’re invoking. You want the government (I’ll bet you’re
employed by) to enslave the masses by stripping them of their God given right
to defend themselves & making us dependent upon a government that will use
the very same gun on us to enslave us all.
You are invoking slavery under the guise of “Sincerity” Sincerity comes from
people who seek freedom, not from people who seek to regulate others.
Oh, & there is plenty of evidence in history that proves when a nation of
people are unarmed they are just a nation of slaves.
We are a nation of free people with a government, not a government with a
nation of slaves.
My wife is an elementary school teacher and my daughter is a high school
teacher. I have a concern about them like anyone else. However, I believe
teachers should have the right to defend themselves. This situation is a
mixed bag.
