Breaking news: Senate supports public vote on tax hike to help budget
PHOENIX — With bipartisan support, the state Senate voted today to ask voters for a three-year hike in the state sales tax.
The 16-12 vote came over the objections of several lawmakers who said that even asking voters for more money is a bad idea.
Sen. Amanda Aguirre, D-Yuma, said residents of her county can’t afford to pay the additional penny on the current 5.6 percernt sales tax.
“We have a lot of folks out there that have no way to buy goods,” she said,

They are saying a 3 year duration for the state sales tax increase? I
remember in Illinois years ago. They said the state income tax increase would
only be temporary. It’s still in force to this very day! Be careful what you
vote for!
While I understand the concern of Sen. Aguirre with regard to her
constituents who are barely making ends meet, I also have to ask the
question, Can we afford not to hike the sales tax by one cent? Is it worth
the cuts that will have to be made to education on top of all the other cuts
the state has faced? The long term repercussions to cutting more from the
education budget includes more people down the road working low income jobs
because they were in a classroom of 30+ children, didn’t ever learn to read
or write proficiently, and had few if any opportunities for extracurricular
activities and sports (since they too are on the chopping block in many
schools). This tax hike could mean the difference between students sinking
and students swimming. Arizona needs well educated students for a bright
future in our state!
That says it all.
I believe the public should vote on Gov. Brewer’s tax plan. After all the
public is the one most affected.
