FORT HUACHUCA — Clouds hugged the Huachuca Mountains from top to bottom, as a steady cold rain, and occasional sleet, fell Thursday on soldiers of the 86th Expeditionary Signal Battalion.

It is weather they will find next winter in Afghanistan, where the unit is scheduled to deploy to in the next couple of months.

Battalion commander Lt. Col. Pal Craft said the weather is providing an additional sense of reality of what his soldiers will face during their year in Afghanistan, where, like Arizona, temperatures can range from very cold to extremely hot.
