Whetstone shooting victim in stable condition
SIERRA VISTA — A man shot in the stomach in an apparent accidental shooting in Whetstone is in stable condition at a Tucson hospital.
Michael Van Kirk, 19, was airlifted to University Medical Center on Saturday after Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of shots fired on Via Corta at about 5:20 p.m.
On Monday, Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Carol Capas said that two women, a mother and daughter, had been checking the mother’s .44-caliber revolver at the residence.
The mother was apparently having difficulty with the gun, and the daughter took possession of it. Soon after, it discharged, the bullet striking Van Kirk in the abdomen.
He was airlifted to Tucson for treatment.
There, he was interviewed by deputies on Sunday morning.
No arrests or citations have been issued as of Monday, though the investigation is ongoing, Capas said.
