Benefactor aiding county law enforcement effort

SIERRA VISTA — The largess of a family foundation is providing financial support for a number of law enforcement functions, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said Friday night.

Through the Buffett Family Foundation, the sheriff’s department has received many thousands of dollars, Dannels told more than 60 people who attended the Republican 1200 Club dinner.

On March 25, Howard G. Buffett will attend the dedication of a firing range, which the foundation provided the money to build. The $900,000 facility will be located behind the sheriff’s complex in Bisbee, Dannels said, adding the facility will be named in honor of the county’s late sheriff, Larry Dever.

Thanks to the Buffetts for providing help to Cochise County Sheriffs Office
in the way of money. We need to be aware the Sheriff office is way under
strength- Keep working to get more Deputies!

I’m still shaking my head over the woman who said the Constitution was
outdated. What a dummy! Thank you, Sheriff Dannels for supporting the
Constitution that has worked so well for so long. And, thank you to the
Buffetts for your support of our Sheriff’s Department!!

This is great news, but it’s also one of those articles that leaves a lot of
questions. I don’t recall ever hearing about the Buffett family’s generosity
(or presence) in Cochise County. Was it a secret before this, and if so, why?
And why is it no longer a secret — did something change recently? When was
the first donation and how much has been received each year? Does the county
compete for the money, as in a grant application, or is it just because? Not
to look a gift horse in the mouth, because this is certainly wonderful for
our county, but you’d think it would be more widely known.
