It was learned late Tuesday night that Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever has died in a single vehicle rollover accident in Coconino County.

Dever was driving up to meet one of his sons for a two-day family hunting trip in Coconino County when his vehicle rolled on a gravel U.S. forest service road about 15 miles outside of Williams, Cochise County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

Title: Shocked

as I awoke his morning I heard the news of Sherrif Dever’s death. I thtought
I was dreaming only to sit up staring at the sad reality. Our beloved sherrif
was dead. I always thought Sherrif Dever was a good and fair man who loved
his country, state and county. He was a “hands on” man who was involved in
many aspects of our communities from charity fundraisers to defending our
borders. I am, as surely many are, feeling stunned and saddened by his tragic
death. Thank you Larry for your many years of service to our beloved Cochise
County and the people who loved you. Rest in peace. God will welcome you into
his kingdom.

Title: So Sorry

After so long it was easy to think of Larry as “permanent.” None of us are
permanent some just loom larger than others and seem so. Cochise County has
had its share of larger than life lawmen and Larry is among them.

Shocked and truly saddened to see the headline this morning. What a terrible
loss of a great man in our community, and for his family and dear friends.
Thoughts are with Mrs. Dever. I am sure every time he left for work Nancy
would hold her breath until he got home safely, and then for something like
this to happen… I just cannot imagine. Praying that she finds strength in
her family, friends, her Faith. My prayers going out to all the Dever sons
and family, and especially to Nancy - from another Nancy.

It is a great loss for all of Cochise County. He was a great Sheriff, public
servant, and a national leader on the border security. He appeared at
Congressional hearings and wrote a major op-ed article for the Wall Street
Journal on the subject. Larry was a kind, caring man, who loved his country
and was a public servant who made all of us feel safer living in Cochise
County. My deepest sympathies to his wife Nancy, and his family.

As a citizen, I heard Sherriff Dever speak at outreach events and read about
Sherriff Dever’s representation of border issues and his hands on involvement
in community affairs. I had the highest respect for Sherriff Dever and was
proud to be numbered among Cochise County residents because of his of
integrity and caring heart. He leaves a void behind that will be hard to

Title: Sheriff Dever

I had the high honor and privilege of working with the Sheriff for the past 5
years. He was a man of integrety, honor and loyalty to every citizen of the
county. His leadership will be sorely missed, but through his efforts, he
leaves behind a well-organized and professional law enforcement agency. My
deepest condolences to Nancy and the family.
