SIERRA VISTA — Huachuca City may soon find itself in court defending a recently passed ordinance barring sex offenders from public places after the mayor received a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union stating the ordinance could violate the First Amendment and “lead to litigation.”

Mayor Byron Robertson announced that he had received the letter from the ACLU during Thursday’s regular council meeting.

If one in every 279 Huachuca City residents is a convicted sex offender (compared to 1 in about 2,700 for SV), perhaps the community should devote a little more effort to determining what makes the place such an apparent pervert’s paradise. I doubt it’s the library.

Title: Perhaps..

You should ask the sex offenders.  I am sure Huachuca City did not advertise for them much as I am sure that Sierra Vista didn’t ban them.  I think that choice lies with the individual.

Ran is always more concerned with the rights of the criminals than protecting our community.

they’ve already been tried, convicted, served thier time.  Why should they be subjected to extra-ordinary punishment?  There’s no reason thier freedom to use the PUBLIC library and the PUBLIC pool should be infringed, they pay taxes for them.  How is denying them the library protecting the community?  Has there been incidents at the library that we don’t know about?  You want to protect the community then lobby to bar convicted drunk drivers from places that serve alcohol.

And this rule doesn’t protect young people from all the predators out there like priests in the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts or the Sandusky’s of the world.  The family had better not count of society to protect your precious kids, unfortunately.

you forgot to add government school teacher and government school coach to your list of predators.

How do you choose the occupations that you add to that list? You might recall that, in the last few years, two different Ft. Huachuca Sgts have been convicted of multiple counts of molestation and a Pvt. was arrested for molestation charges in GA. Would you endorse adding US government soldier to your list of predatory occupations, or do you reserve that special brand of prejudice for educators only?

not slanderous at all, but thanks for illustrating my point.

Knight Rider on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 7:11am

Are you saying you want to wait for some incident to happen to do something? You already know sex offenders can’t be rehabilitated, why put anyone at risk? No one is doing anything to their freedom except for them. You see, we have rules and laws in this country and when you CHOOSE to break those laws there are consequences. Sorry, but you can save your sad story for someone else, I want to protect the community not put people at risk.

So by your own logic, you should lose your privilidge to drive a car. You may hit and kill someone after all, and why wait for it to happen. We should prevent the death you may cause with your car. Also, if you have ever gotten a ticket, you should now pay $1000 more. We are going to keep adding new laws that will punish you every few years for what you did wrong.
