SIERRA VISTA — The fire consuming thousands of acres in the Chiricahua Mountains this past week couldn’t have come at a worse time for several small businesses in the community of Portal.

This hit us at the absolute peak of the year,” said Peg Abbot, owner of Naturalist Journeys, a small birding tour guide business in an area well known to bird watchers.

Normally, April and May are the busiest times for businesses like Abbot’s and the various lodgings dotting the eastern edge of the Coronado National Forest.
