SIERRA VISTA — A pursuit of a vehicle suspected to be loaded with illegal immigrants was called off after speeds reached upwards of 100 mph on Highway 90, police said.

Officers responding to a report of a “load” vehicle spotted the Chevrolet Impala as it traveled south near the Sierra Vista Municipal Airport around 2:23 p.m. Thursday, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

As many as seven people were inside the car during the pursuit, which was called off for safety reasons, Grady said.

Why does it seem that anyone who runs and doesn’t wreck easily gets away around here? Is our police force untrained in stopping tactics and are they unaware of new technologies that could be utilized to stop these fleeing vehicles? I am not suggesting everyone should run from the cops, but it seems like if you do that around here you stand a pretty good chance of getting away.

Title: Law Suits

For Windsor - from my limited knowledge, LEO’s are not held legally responsible for damages occuring due to accidents during vehicle chases - whether by the LEO’s or the fleeing vehicle…

The police acted responsibly by calling off the pursuit for safety reasons. The issue is not the bravery of the cops or their driving skills. There was only a suspicion the vehicle was carrying illegals. That’s sufficient reason to make a traffic stop, but when the suspect vehicle was being driven at excessive speeds, it’s likely the driver was going to run red lights, as well. The very real danger to the public then demanded that the cops back off. If they had continued and the suspect vehicle crashed into another motorist, it might have been a tragedy.

We already had a terrible accident here that claimed many lives.  It is not worth taking out the lives of innocent people.  I agree, it sucks to let them go but law enforcement also has to contend with lawsuits if they pursue a vehicle that wrecks and kills innocents.  You, too, would sue if someone close to you were killed by an officer pursuit.

Title: 7 people?

Ummmm - 7 people from mexico in one car is really quite normal. Just sit at Willson Road and Hwy 92, it goes on all day long.

The vehicle was heading south? Let ‘em go - perhaps they were headed back to Mexico so Americans could take their jobs back here.

did they think the people would sit in the car and wait to be found for the police. no wonder they drive 100 miles an hour to escape. it works, the cops stop chasing. Why? are the cops not as good as drivers so scared for thier own lives and not good enough shot to blow out the tires. do not communicate with cops from other towns to get cops from other towns to sit up road blocks down the road in front of them?  When others see crooks out run the police it encourages more to do the same thing. quitting is the wrong thing to do.

Title: too risky

The problem with chases is that sometimes innocent people get killed.  I imagine they called it off in the interest of public safety.
