A day of remembrance

Saturday was designated as Patriot Day in 2002 in honor of the memory of nearly 3,000 killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The day initially was called Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

The American flag is be flown at half-staff at individual homes, at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings at home and abroad. Americans also are asked to observe a moment of silence starting at 8:46 a.m. EDT, the time the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center nine years ago.
