Party's over at Buena: Dances will no longer be hosted by school
SIERRA VISTA — Due to “dirty and provocative dancing” the administration at Buena High School informed the student council last week that it would no longer host or sponsor any dances in the upcoming school year. The responsibility will now be up to student and parent groups.
The decision was made at the tail end of the last school year after what Superintendent Brett Agenbroad cites as a series of liability risks and lack of “redeeming value” in dances.

Reminds me of the “Good Ole Days” where prudes censored everything that was
fun. Remember Elvis? Homecoming and the Prom are some of the most cherished
activities outside the classroom. Not eveyone had fun at them (I wonder why)
but the vast majority do. Considering many of the decision this school’s
administration have made over the last few years, I am surprised that we
don’t have to wear a ball and chain to classes. BTW, Dirty Dancing has been
around a lot longer than the prudes in the Administration have. I can
remember my grandfather talking about it when he was in school. Welcome to
backwoods Sierra Vista where the kids mean nothing!
To play devil’s advocate, the waltz was once also considered too provacative
to be done in polite society… I do not believe that the actions of SOME of
the student body at the dance in question was appropriate. I do believe that
PARENTS are the ones who should be held accountable for managing to raise
responable teenagers. That being said, the funds raised thru these dances are
significant to the Student Council and could be raised thru the PTSO and
doled out to ALL clubs or teachers to help off set budget cuts. The 600
signatures should be the first place to start. In his address today, the
Super stated the Project Grad is also a success and an NON SCHOOL SUPPORTED
event, so don’t be a naysayer. Dances aren’t everyones fond high school
memory~ Senior Prom “sucked”, in my opinion, but I’d like my kids to have the
option of going. If we’re too busy to pay attention to our kids, then don’t
be surprised when “everyone else” is, too.
It is not a childs right to have school sponsered dances. It’s just something
that gives fond memories. It would be nice if things could be worked out.
I value education, but, I also realize that everyone needs some enjoyment.
It’s a shame that things could not have been worked out. I have not attended
any of the dances but I do have questions. There seems to have been a dance
that was out of control.Who were the students that caused problems. Were they
seniors that just graduated? Were the students given a warning that if these
actions took place in the future ALL dances would cease. Certain songs
encourage aggressive/sexual behavior, did anyone screen/censor what songs
would be played? If you can’t see what is happening on the dance floor…is
it that the lights are dimmed. If so turn them on. If there is vulgar
language, dirty dancing, anger….no problem they can visit the detention
teacher during the week. Have each child turn in their ID entering the dance.
There are alot of options. Three hundred parents signed the petition, require
more parents at these functions.
I thought about Homecoming and Prom but wouldn’t throw a temper trantrum if
it was cancelled. If a student drops out of school over a dance then some
mental help is needed.
You are a great salesman for voting against the override. Chalk one up.
Actually I was replying to “Shoppingmom212 on Tue, 08/03/2010 - 10:22 Title:
Get a clue” response. I do support the override and will vote YES.
I am with Family Man and Average Joe. The Country is a mess, with everyone
thining they have rights, no matter how ridiculous; Females wanting to be
Kings, Males wanting to be Queens. Just look at the protests in the streets
of Phoenix for an example of the County gone upside down. Schools should
uphold moral standards.
It seems to be a pattern. My first experience with Buena showed that most
teachers and administration don’t really care about students. For the most
part they are just there to draw a paycheck. The fees associated with
athletics have been driven up to the point where only the wealthy can afford
to allow their kids to participate. Now they are taking away one of the
better venues for social interaction for the kids. I think Mrs. Carlson
better get the propaganda mill fired up, she’s got some real damage control
to attend to or a lot of parents will be sending their kids elsewhere.
dajones, the athletic fees are because the state took away over $5 million
dollars from SVPS. I prefer to pay the fees then have 50 students in the
classes. The students are not required to play a sport. All of my experiences
with Carlson and the administrative staff have been very positive. They
treated me with respect and helped me to their best ability.
