SIERRA VISTA — It was nearly 133 years ago — March 3, 1877 — when a small cavalry detachment led by Capt. Samuel Marmaduke Whitside stopped by a running stream flowing out of Huachuca Canyon, encamped and started what would first be called Camp Huachuca and now is Fort Huachuca.

The mission then was to protect the settlers rushing west after the Civil War in the then-territory of Arizona and to bring to heel the Apaches.

It seems to me that Ft. Huachuca has always been the source for economy for
the area for many years. That includes Bisbee where I lived for 25 years
while employed at Ft. Huachuca. Many retirees have settled in the area and
depend on Ft. Huachuca to supplement their retirement with the extras that
Ft. Huachuca’s post exchange and commissary can provide. If Ft. Huachuca ever
closes down, it will have a tremendous impact upon the surrounding
 communities.
