FORT HUACHUCA — There is much African-Americans have to be proud of, but there is more the black community not only can do but must do to achieve greatness, Brig. Gen. LaWarren Patterson said Tuesday.

Speaking to nearly 200 people at the annual Black History Month celebration on post, Patterson said that while looking back is important, an even more crucial element is what is left to be done.

We have come a long way in the transformation of the lives of those who came
or were brought to this continent. Slavery was a world-wide, accepted
economic trade as horrible as it was. Slavery continues to this day in the
African continent and i America as a normal economic practice. Arab and
Islamic traders brought about one million white slaves to North Africa before
a black slave ever set foot on this continent. There were even whole nations
that were under slavery and traded as willed. This is all in the past now and
we have made great strides to improve on our situation in America. I think
getting away from hyphenating people will advance us even more. What does
African-American mean to the average American? What is the difference between
them and the black community? Once we all consider ourselves as Americans,
period, we will learn that we are all in the same boat. There is a lie out
there that blacks are supposed to be democrats. Was Dr. Martin Luther King a
 democrat?

Title: Matter?

Aren’t we all the same regardless of skin color. I am tired of
hearing/grouping people because of their color. I doesn’t matter what you
look like; it’s how you act.
