The first decade of the 21st century started by not ending on Y2K and ended with renewed fears of a pending apocalypse when the Mayan calendar runs out in 2012. 

This was a decade filled with criminal acts of tremendous proportions, war, and disasters of all sorts. The attacks on 9/11 brought Americans together as a nation, but also sparked armed conflicts in the Middle East and trashed the stock market.
