SIERRA VISTA — The mayor and Sierra Vista City Council gave a final green light for the construction of the Walmart Village at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Parkway and State Highway 90 during a meeting Thursday.

The approval of the final subdivision plat marked the final action the city council will take publicly for the Walmart site, Planning Administrator Don Brush said. “Building permits are ready for issuance but have not yet been picked up by Walmart. We assume they may be waiting for this final action.”

The Supercenter and Sam’s club will curb the shopping in Tucson by locals
since all they need will be here. The current store, which has been
prosperous since it opened years ago, will be absorbed by the new stores.
Personally, I believe the shopping opportunities will draw people into SV
from outside the town. This stream of shoppers from other parts of Cochise
County, and beyond, will benefit other local businesses. The Wal-Mart centers
will be like a magnet for all SV businesses.

Title: good?

I know that wal-mat will create alot of jobs, but what about the already
struggling localy owned businesses that can not compete with a monopolizing
giant like wal-mart? what about the jobs lost and the business owners closing
stores? i am trying to look at this from all sides. and No i do not own a
 business

welcome, sv, to the real world. walmart has a good track record on putting
the hurt on local business. was a series of articles in the 90’s about it
happening in the midwest. walmart and it’s ilk virtually decimated historic
downtown in my hometown. this problem is not unique to sv, but there does
appear to be some lack of thinking thru 2d and 3d order affects of decsions
in this town.

Title: Finally

I agree! At long last the WalMart can start going in. Does anyone know the
real truth on the long standing rumor that IHOP is coming to town? I also
would like to see what the plans are for the existing WalMart.

It will be great to see so many new jobs added to our city economy - we need
 them!

Its a little hard to get excited about a few jobs, non of which will pay a
living wage. However I will miss watching the blue hairs jousting over the
handicapped parking spaces at the old Wal Mart. Its really exciting watching
them race around the parking lot and dodging unsuspecting pedestrians trying
to squeeze into any opening. At least the parking at Fry’s will be easier.

Title: Doubtful

I won’t believe it until I can actually walk into the stores and purchase
something. “A new Super Walmart is coming” is something I’ve been hearing for
the last 5 or 6 years and it still hasn’t happened. As for going “green”,
where are they NOT going green that is going to cost us all? They say they’re
doing various things (including one aspect which hasn’t even been started by
the city yet), but where are the places where they’re not going green, yet
could? And IF it opens, what about their merchandise? I’ve been very
frustrated with both quality and quantity, not to mention the items they’ve
discontinued that I have NO source for anywhere else in the community. Is
this Walmart really going to be a benefit?
