At fort, Marine Corps’ birthday ball carries on many proud traditions
FORT HUACHUCA — On Feb. 19, 1945, Marines stormed the black lava beaches of Iwo Jima, beginning a five-week battle to wrest control of that small island from Imperial Japanese forces.
Operation Detachment, as the attack was called, was to separate the island from Japanese control so its airfields could be used to recover crippled U.S. bombers after they made attacks on the Japanese home islands.
