Solar power can energize economy, Giffords says
TEMPE — Solar power might seem futuristic, but thousands of panels supplying electricity from atop at Arizona State University buildings show the technology is ready to help the state add jobs and move toward energy independence, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., said Monday.
“When I’m flying in an airplane, I look down and see all these flat surfaces below me and think one day I’ll look down and be excited to see solar,” Giffords said.

The key word in this article is that with 9000 panels it is only producing a
fraction of the power the university uses. How much did those 9000 panels
cost? Doesn’t say so in the article but I am willing to bet it was in the
millions. The problem is solar panels are very inefficient and do not produce
much power. That is why you need so many panels just to produce a little
power. Giffords again shows us just how ignorant she thinks the public is.
Solar energy is a good idea and can save money, but the upfront costs are
very high. If we introduce it a little bit at a time, then we will not have
as many overhead costs at one time.
