Whenever we go to the Grand Canyon to hike or mule, or just plain enjoy ourselves, a trip to Hermit’s Rest on the West Rim is a must. Years and years ago, the West Rim was opened to private vehicles all year long. Then, as the popularity of the Grand increased, it was necessary to shut down the West to private vehicles during the peak season. Later, it was closed off all year long due to the advent of the shuttle bus. At the entrance to the West Rim road, there is an electronic gate, which precludes private vehicles from entering.
