SIERRA VISTA — Don Schoen started a slightly more than 27-year career in the Air Force as a fighter pilot during World War II with the Army Air Forces.

There were about two years of training to become a pilot, said Schoen.

It was September 1944 when Don arrived in Europe after sailing from the East Coast of the U.S. for five days.

And it was after arriving at an air base in England that he got his first look at and first ride in a C model of the P-51.
