A Peer-to-peer recovery education course will begin at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the NAMI Resource Center at 4755 Campus Dr. This 10-week course (two hours per week) will meet  on Tuesday evenings. The Democratic Women of Southeastern Arizona’s next meeting is scheduled for 11 A.M. Feb. 21 at  Pueblo del Sol Country Club. The guest speaker will be Dr. Robert Carreira, director of Economic Research at Cochise College. He will be explaining about the national debt.  The Huachuca Audubon Society will offer an informative and enjoyable look at the “Great American Desert” at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Horace Steele Conference Room at Cochise College. Sandy and Betsy Kunzer will report on their 2011 photographic exploration of some of the major desert divisions.  

The Sierra Vista Winter Visitors Program continues at 9 a.m. Feb. 22 with a presentation regarding European Immigration by Wes Patience. The program is hosted by Immanuel Lutheran Church located at 2145 S. Coronado and is open to the public. The Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning will host Our Safari Adventure with Sheila DeVoe Heidman and Rebecca Orozco from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in room 702 at the college. The Serengeti and Ngorogoro migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles is considered one of the world’s greatest wonders. AARP Chapter 3123 will hold a meeting at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Ethel Berger Center. Kathleen Heard, director of SEAGO Area Agency on Aging, will give an overview of services. Refreshments will be served. For details, call 459-0759.

The SVRHC Wellness Depot and Martha Chambers, a licensed massage therapist specializing in Arthritis Massage, will discuss how massage can benefit people who suffer from Fibromyalgia or arthritis during a presentation at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Wellness Depot.. The Patterson Observatory and the Huachuca Astronomy Club invite you to a public viewing of the night sky at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting, on Feb. 23 at the observatory. Various star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and planets, including Jupiter and it’s brightest moons, will be on the list of things to see. Everyone is invited to this free event. The observatory is located at 1140 N. Colombo Dr., on the University of Arizona South campus, just east of Cochise College.

Relay for Life Team Captains will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, located at St. Andrews and Buffalo Soldier Trail. Bisbee’s well-known artist Judy Perry is enlisting help of individuals and groups to create a massive, colorful timeline of Bisbee’s art heritage accompanied by notebooks with photos, posters, programs and news articles about the various artists who did or do call Bisbee home. The Sierra Vista Symphony League presents the 5th Annual “Men Who Cook” event from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Windemere Hotel. The 2012 Senior Softball season opens on March 4. For details on how to participate, attend a free Senior Softball barbecue at Veteran’s Park, Ramada #2, from noon to 4 p.m. on Feb 25. New players are welcomed to the league and will be placed on teams regardless of skill level. Men over 45 and women over 25 are eligible to play. The American Legion Auxiliary will host A Poppy Meeting for Jr. members in Cochise County from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at the American Legion Hall in Tombstone. During this meeting, Jr. members will learn the significance of Poppies to American Veterans, will open the Poppies to be distributed during Memorial Day, make Poppy bouquets to be used on the grave sites of Auxiliary members on Memorial Day, and plan how they will spread the message of Poppies.

Birders of all levels are invited to participate in upcoming bird walks sponsored by the Friends of the San Pedro River. The next walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. Feb. 25 and depart from the San Pedro House, 9800 E. Hwy. 90. There is no charge for the walks, however, donations are accepted to support docent programs. The Cochise College Cultural Diversity Committee is collaborating with Celeste Atkins’ SOC 160 (Ethnic Groups and Minorities) class to bring a panel of Native American people to the Sierra Vista Campus to discuss sociological issues, such as stereotypes, reservation life and tribal identity. This discussion, free and open to the public, will take place from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Horace Steele Room at Cochise College. The Center for Lifelong Learning will present “Green Infrastructure Grant for Sierra Vista” with James DeRoussel and James MacAdam from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Feb. 29 in room 702 at the college. `Green Infrastructure refers to constructed features that use living, natural systems to provide environmental services, such as capturing, cleaning and infiltrating storm water; creating wildlife habitat; shading and cooling streets and buildings; and calming traffic. The Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee is assisting the Cochise County Humane Society by selling 2012 calendars with photos of local dogs for $10. Club hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All proceeds support Cochise County Humane Society. The club will be selling them through February.  

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees, Chap 1400, will hold a business meeting and luncheon on March 1 at the Mande Le’ Restaurant, 3455 Canyon de Flores.  Be there by 11 a.m. to order from the menu. The meeting will be held while the food is being prepared. The speaker will be Charlene Rhodes with the Cochise County Recorder’s Office. Yoga classes continue to be offered at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, 1425 Yaqui St.  The new set of classes begins March 1 and will run through April 30.  The cost is $30, and all proceeds go to the church. The SVRHC Auxiliary will host their annual Candlelight Ball fundraiser on March 3. Included in the program is a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are now on sale and the cost is $20 each. The annual 1880s Historic Costume Ball will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. March 3 at St. David School on Highway 80 seven miles south of Benson.
