The 4th Annual Taste of Chocolate held by the Buena Denominators Math Club will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Buena cafeteria. Six full-sized desserts will be offered for $10 and there will be live music and coffee available. The money collected will be used for Calculus Camp.

Join The Tombstone Cowboy Church for our community outreach program:  “Concert and Dance”, featuring country gospel band Desert Reign. The UsTOO prostate cancer support group will host Dr. Jeffery M. Wolk, a urologist at Arizona Cancer Center, at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at Sun Canyon Inn, 260 N. Garden Ave. Dr. Wolk’ will be speaking about important prostate cancer issues. Sierra Vista Police Department is sponsoring the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 28 at The Cove, 2900 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Registration begins at 8 a.m. This year’s Polar Plunge theme is, “Video Game Characters,” and Sierra Vista Police are challenging you to take the plunge for Special Olympics. The 4th Annual Rock for Rehab  will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Bisbee Convention Center to benefit the Verhelst Recovery House. The all-day event includes a concert, an auction, and food and beverages. Nine bands from across the state will be performing. Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for kids.

AZgreyhounds of Sierra Vista will conduct a Greyhound Adoption Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at Wild Birds Unlimited, 49 N. Coronado Dr. Calm, gentle and eager to please, these graceful pets are quite comfortable giving up life in the fast lane. The program is also in need of temporary home for these beautiful dogs. Paw Print Artists will be showing their work at the Gold Canyon Arts Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 28 on the grounds of the Gold Canyon United Methodist Church just north of the intersection of U.S. 60 and King’s Ranch Road, in Gold Canyon. There will be over 100 artists and live entertainment.

A book and music event will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at Singing Wind Bookshop in Benson. Entertainment will include Cowboy poetry, music, western history, and a lasso twirler. The Sierra Vista Community Band will perform in small ensembles at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Ethel Berger Center. Admission to attend the show is free. The community band rehearses at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Oscar Yrun Community Center. All instrumental musicians in the area are welcome to join the band. Just bring your own horn and a stand.

The Cochise County Humane Society is hosting a fundraiser lunch at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Outback Steakhouse. The meal will be a Build-a-Burger lunch with fries, beverage and an ice cream sundae. Tickets are $20 per person and carry-out will be available. All money raised in this event will stay in the county to support programs for animals. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee is assisting the Cochise County Humane Society by selling 2012 calendars with photos of local dogs for $10. Club hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All proceeds support Cochise County Humane Society. The club will be selling them through February.

PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Unitarian Universalist Church office in Sierra Vista. The office is located at 1020 E. The San Pedro River Arts Council is accepting applications for the 2012 Celebrate the Arts Juried Show.  Application deadline is midnight on Feb. 1. The Juried Art Show will run  from March 1 through March 29 at Cochise College, Benson Center.

The Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning invites you to our presentation of Geology in Southeast Arizona for Birders, Gardeners and Anyone Who Drinks Water with Geologist Sandy Kunzer. The presentation will be held from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Feb. 1 in room 714 in the Community Outreach Building at the college (Sierra Vista Campus). Forgach House, Sierra Vista’s shelter for homeless women and children, will be holding a Benefit Valentine Day Dinner on Feb. 11 at the Windemere Hotel. Social Hour will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Entertainment will follow the meal until 8 p.m. Cost is $40 per person and dinner selection can be made with an RSVP to 378-2670 no later than Feb. 1.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 1400, will host a business meeting and luncheon on Feb. 2 at the Mande Le’ Restaurant, 3455 Canyon de Flores.  Be there by 11 a.m. to order from the menu. The meeting will be held while the food is being prepared. Our speaker will be Dave Santor of the Sierra Vista Historical Society.  All members and those eligible to become NARFE members are invited to attend.

The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center Auxiliary will host a two-day sales event featuring Masquerade Jewelry from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 2 in the atrium of the Carter Imaging Center on Colonia de Salud. The sale continues from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Jenney Room of SVRHC. All items are $5.

Sierra Vista United Methodist Church (SVUMC) will host a “Cowboy Weekend” on Feb. 3 in the Fellowship Hall. From 9 to 11 a.m., there will be coffee, doughnuts, and entertainment. The artists will be in Sierra Vista for the Annual Cochise County Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering, Feb. 3, 4, and 5, at the Buena Performing Arts Center, and they’ll kick off their weekend with this special session.  There will be lots of great music, poetry, and fellowship. Friends of Huachuca City Library are holding a two-day book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 3 and 4 at their storage container located behind the Police Station next to city park in Huachuca City.  All subjects are available, including romance, history, and non-fiction.

The Huachuca Astronomy Club will be holding a monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Community Room in the Student Union at the Cochise College campus. The guest speaker will be Jeremy Moss, Archaeologist at Tumacacori National Historical Park, National Park Service. The 3rd Annual Mind Body Spirit Expo of Southern Arizona will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 4 at The Windemere Hotel and Conference Center, 2047 S Highway 92. The Tombstone Community Church Men’s Fellowship will host a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at the church fellowship hall located at 2nd and Allen St. in Tombstone. Cost of the meal is a $6 donation for adults and a $3 donation for kids 12 and under. The meal includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and a drink.

Water Wise will host a free talk from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 4 entitled “Well, What Do We Know.” This talk will be held in the public meeting room, Groth Hall, at UA South, 1140 N. Colombo Ave.  All aspects of private wells in Arizona, including basics of hydrology and geology, well construction, maintenance, regulations, water quality, drinking water standards, and home water treatment options will be covered. Presenters will be Dr. Janick Artiola, UA Water Quality Specialist and Gary Hix, President, Arizona Well Water Association.

Sierra Vista United Methodist Church (SVUMC) will hold its 8th Annual Western Heritage on Feb. 5. This special Sunday recalls the bold men and women who built the Old West. All services will feature special music by the SVUMC Choir, the Sugartones, Thunder Mountain 4, Desert Song, The Cochise Chordsmen, and the Arthritis Brothers. The message will be in the unique form of a western drama, presented via old-time radio format. Wear western duds and plan to enjoy the open microphone between services, where you can read poems or tell western stories. Plan on staying for the Cowboy Steak Dinner, which follows the noon service. Tickets are $12 or $5 for hamburgers or hotdogs. Services are at 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. The church is located at the corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and St. Andrews Drive.  

Bisbee’s well-known artist Judy Perry is enlisting help of individuals and groups to create a massive, colorful timeline of Bisbee’s art heritage accompanied by notebooks with photos, posters, programs and news articles about the various artists who did or do call Bisbee home. The next Sierra Vista Woman’s Club meeting will be held on Feb. 7 at the Pueblo Del Sol Country Club. Meet and greet begins at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at 11:30. The Buena High School band program will present two concerts in February. The Buena Concert and Symphonic Band will perform Tuesday, Feb. 7 and the Honor Band will perform Thursday, Feb. 9. Both concerts are free to attend and begin at 7 p.m. at the Buena Performing Arts Center. In addition to its full concert program, the Honor Band will premier the school’s alma mater, recommissioned by Buena alum Daniel Leo Simpson, class of 1969.

The next HASRA (Huachuca Area School Retiree’s Association) meeting will be held at 10:15 a.m. Feb. 9 in the Mona Bishop Room at the Sierra Vista library. Nancy Dever, retired special education teacher, will present a program on autism. She has had extensive training in working with autistic children and currently helps both parents and teachers of children with autism in Cochise County.  New retirees and retired school employees from any state are welcome to attend. The Lincoln Day Dinner, hosted by the Cochise County Republican Committee, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Knights of Columbus Building. CANTER (Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources) is holding a fund raising dinner dance, “Hearts and Horses,” on Feb. 11 at the Elks Lodge in Sierra Vista. The night out will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction. Music will be by Sally and Clayton. The Mule Mountain Democrat Club will continue its membership drive at their meeting on Feb. 11 at the El Cobre Restaurant in Bisbee. A no-host breakfast will be available at 9:30 and the meeting will start at 10 a.m. Membership for the year is $10. The agenda will include a report of the state Democrat party meeting and plans for 2012.

A Mardi Gras dinner-dance with New Orleans-style food and a DJ will be held at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 11 and will be sponsored by Our Lady’s Auxiliary of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. Tickets at $18 will be available after weekend masses or by calling the church office at 378-2720. Tickets will not be sold at the door, as there’s limited seating. This fundraiser will benefit certain organizations around our community.

The Huachuca Area Republican Women’s Club will meet for lunch on Feb. 14 at Pueblo del Sol Country Club. The deadline to RSVP is Feb. 12. Registration and social time begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a program at 11 a.m. Featured speaker will be Bob Murphy, Chairman of the Sierra Vista Regional Hospital Center Foundation. He will present an overview of the many ways in which the Foundation supports our Hospital and their future endeavors. Also in attendance will be Eva Dickerson, the Hospital Foundation Manager. Village Meadows Baptist Church is hosting Keith Longbotham, a country singer from Nashville, at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at the church, 1407 El Camino Real. Keith’s credits include several recorded CD’s, appearances on local and national television, and personal appearances all over the country.  He has a unique blend of musical talent, humor, and sincerity. Performing with Keith are Chris Marion and T.J. Klay. Chris plays keyboard and writes gospel music and children’s musicals; one of his compositions has been nominated for a Dove award. T.J. The Parent Connection for Autism meets every second Tuesday of the month at the Oscar Yrun Community Center. The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14. The Parent Connection for Autism is a social group for parents to talk to one another and teachers and hosts outside speakers to help support students with transition, social life and high school inclusion. The 19th Annual High Desert Gardening & Landscaping Conference will be held Feb. 16 and 17 at the Windmere Hotel & Conference Center. The wonderful world of Southwest gardening has unique opportunities and challenges. The City of Sierra Vista Commission on Cultural Diversity is seeking participants for the 2012 Cultural Diversity Fair. Those interested in participating must register by Feb. 17. The Cochise County Democratic Party will hold its annual High Desert Dinner on Feb. 27 at the Roka Restaurant, 35 Main Street, in Bisbee. The special guest and speaker will be David Fitzsimmons, cartoonist and columnist for the Arizona Daily Star.  The dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. Many Democratic Party candidates will also be in attendance and will make brief remarks. The SVRHC Auxiliary will host their annual Candlelight Ball fundraiser on March 3. Included in the program is a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are now on sale and the cost is $20 each.
