Water Wise offerings for 2009

Published/Last Modified on Thursday, Jan 01, 2009 - 05:11:52 am MST

Water Wise is welcoming in 2009 with these great presentations. Some are back by popular demand, and others are new offerings. All are free and unless noted will be in the Public Meeting Room at the University of Arizona South, 1140 N. Colombo Ave., in Sierra Vista. Registration is not necessary.

Jan. 10, 9-10 a.m.: “State of the Watershed.” Come learn about the Sierra Vista Subwatershed groundwater deficit, what is being done to address our water needs and why does it matter? Holly Richter, Upper San Pedro Partnership member and board member, Upper San Pedro Water District Organizing Board.

Jan.16, 1:30-2:30 p.m.: “Rain-Only Landscapes.” Join Carmen Miller, UA Cooperative Extension Water Wise instructional specialist, to learn some basics in creating a beautiful landscape that only uses rainwater. Location: Willcox Community Center.

Feb. 21, 9 a.m.-noon: “Pruning Landscape Plants.” A well-pruned plant is a healthy plant, and a healthy plant is a water wise plant. Participants will see how to correctly prune trees and shrubs with Carmen Miller, International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist and UA Cooperative Extension Water Wise Instructional Specialist. Location: Contact your Extension office.

March 7, 9–11 a.m.: “Landscape Design.” Are you stumped on how to design a landscape? Do you want a particular style? If so then this is the presentation for you. Xeriscape (low-water landscapes) will be the focus of the talk. Cyndi Wilkins, UA Cooperative Extension Water Wise Instructional Specialist.

WAM! April is “Water Awareness Month!” Look for the special newspaper insert.

April 4, 9-11:30 a.m.: “Irrigation 101.” Drip irrigation systems are great — if you know how to use them but are water-wasting if you don’t! At this hands-on presentation, you learn about the basics of drip irrigation systems. Cado Daily and Cyndi Wilkins, UA Cooperative Extension Water Wise.

April 18: 9-11 a.m.: “How Do I Water?” Watering a plant is an art and a science, but which is which? Come learn how to assess a plant’s water needs to keep your landscape healthy and your water bill down. Rob Call, UA Cochise County Cooperative Extension horticulture agent.

May 3, 1-4 p.m.: Water Wise/Master Gardener Spring Xeriscape Tour

June 6, 9-11 a.m.: “Sensational Succulents.” Spring in the desert is a tough time to plant most plants because of the heat and dry winds but succulents love it! Come learn about the wide variety of succulents you can plant in your garden. Cheri Melton, Cochise County master gardener and avid plant enthusiast. Plants will be for sale.

July 11, 8:30 a.m.- noon: Water Wise Rainwater Harvesting Tour.

Aug. 1, 9 -11 a.m.: “Nifty Natives with Petey Mesquity.” “Petey” aka Peter Gierlach of Spadefoot Nursery, formerly of Tucson Desert Survivors Nursery and now with national supplier Mountain States Nursery. Highly knowledgeable and highly infectious in his presentation, Petey will have you hooked on natives before you know it! Plants will be for sale.

Sept. 6, 1-4 p.m.: Water Wise/Master Gardener Fall Xeriscape Tour

Oct. 3, 9-11:30 a.m.: “Planting Trees and Shrubs.” A plant is an investment in time and money. Learn from an expert on how to correctly plant and care for your new yard addition. De Forest Lewis, International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist and Cochise County master gardener.

Nov. 7, 9-11 a.m.: “Septic Care.” Thinking that you’ve never needed to pump your septic system doesn’t mean that is a good thing. Septic systems need regular maintenance. How septic systems work and how to maintain them will be discussed at this workshop. Kitt Farrell-Poe, UA water quality specialist.
