On Wednesday, the American Legion is sponsoring Veterans Christmas Gift Delivery. Volunteers are needed to help deliver the gifts that have been purchased for veterans in our local care centers. Delivery will be on Wednesday. Help is also needed for wrapping the gifts previous to this date. Call 459-6050.

The Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie National Historic Site visitor centers will be closed on Christmas Day. During the rest of the holiday season, the sites will be open during the regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Bisbee

Bisbee Rotary Club will soon conduct its annual Christmas for Naco Program. Last year, more than 400 people crossed the border into Naco, Sonora, Mexico, on Christmas morning to help impoverished children and families in that community. Basic food, clothing and blankets are provided to the poorest residents. In the program’s beginning, about 30 people crossed. People interested in helping the program can give money, supplies or in-kind donations of food, toys and blankets. Mail gifts to the Bisbee Rotary Club, PO Box 21, Bisbee AZ 85603. Food, toys and blankets may be dropped off during week days at Bisbee Bug, 316 Tombstone Canyon Road. This year’s program will commence at 8:30 a.m. Christmas Day at the Naco Port of Entry. Contact Karla Jensen at 432-9207 or 459-8953 or by e-mail at kjensen@cochise.az.gov.

Sierra Vista

The Ramsey Canyon Christmas Bird Count will take place on Saturday. Volunteers are invited to take part in this Huachuca Audubon Society conservation effort to record bird sightings. Participants will gather for a pre-count breakfast at 6:30 a.m. at the Lone Star Cafe. At this time volunteers will receive checklists, maps and other information. There is a small fee. After the count there will be a dinner and wrap-up event at the Country House restaurant. To reserve your spot, e-mail tedmouras@mindspring.com. Visit www.huachuca-audubon.org for more information.

On Dec. 11, the Knights of Columbus of Our Lady of The Mountains Catholic Church, in conjunction with other members of the church, coordinated by Grace Loesch, donated clothes, shoes and other gifts to 24 young women and 30 elderly residents of Asilo Casa Hogar Divina Providencia in Agua Prieta. Each year, Christmas gifts are provided for all the residents of this children’s shelter and nursing home so that all may know the joy and meaning of Christmas. The gifts were gathered at a potluck supper hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Staff members of Asilo Casa Hogar Divina Providencia are always included as guests to this event.

The 16th annual High Desert Gardening and Landscaping Conference will be held Feb. 12 and 13 at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center. Visit cals.arizona.edu/cochise/mg and go to the events page.

The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park is open for bird walks each Sunday morning. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, Huachuca Audubon Society and the Friends of the San Pedro River. Call 432-1388.
