Who lived here ages ago? What did they do? What were they like?
We may soon find out following the excavation of an ancient village that’s located on a piece of private property in the heart of Sierra Vista — one that was being prepared for a new housing development.
The discovery has yielded items that may be able to allow archaeologists to tell us more about the people who inhabited the village at the location known as Summit Heights. The site also has yielded remains of the people who lived in the area then.
This information will add to the depth of knowledge about this already rich historical area.

Archaeologists with WestLand Resources Inc. in Tucson are reviewing the items they found at the site, and they believe it will take at least another year before their work ends.
The items will then be turned over to the Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona, and they will be available to be loaned out by the museum.
Sierra Vistans will surely want to see the items. It’s just a question of whether there could be room made for a permanent location, which would add to the historical attraction of the area for visitors. That raises the question of a new museum site, which the Sierra Vista Historical Society has already been getting in the works, though it has halted fundraising during the economic downtimes we are currently in.
Ancient cultures aren’t a new topic for this area. Archaeological sites have been unveiled along the U.S.-Mexico border, on Fort Huachuca, and there’s the mammoth kill site within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. And who knows how many undiscovered sites may be in the area.
The archaeological discoveries so far show that like people moving here today, ancient peoples found this valley attractive and resources plentiful.
We are glad to know the items found at the site at Summit Heights have been protected and are being researched. It will be exciting for the community to find out more about the ancient peoples who walked and lived in this area thousands of years ago.
