SIERRA VISTA — In an attempt to offer parents another alternative for paying for some of their children’s school-related costs, the Tombstone school district has created a Web-based store.
The Internet store gives parents, or staff, the option to use a credit card to pay for lunches and extracurricular activities, such as sports and Knowledge Bowl.
In addition, community members also can use the Web store to make a tax credit donation by credit card, including specifying what the money is used for if they so wish.
“It’s sometimes easier for people to say ‘charge it,’ than to have cash in hand,” said Lisa Reames, the district’s business manager. “One of the comments at some of our business meetings was that some of the bigger school districts really got a lot more tax credit dollars once they had the ability to receive payment via credit card.”

More plans are in place for the store, according to Reames, who said they plan to start selling school-related memorabilia and use it as an additional resource for fundraising.
“We want to put those items out there and fundraisers for things like the Renaissance Program,” Reames said, describing the program as an academic achievement award program for students. “Renaissance is strictly donation funded: it’s all raised through the community.”
Reames said the site also could potentially be used to help student organizations raise funds for activities they’re doing, such as trips, etc.
With everything the Web site offers, Reames said she has “high hopes” for it.
