SIERRA VISTA — The Knights of Columbus spread Christmas cheer to more than 270 children Monday. The 15th annual Children’s Christmas Party brought in dozens of families for cookies, plush toys and a visit with Santa Claus.

The party is offered for toddlers to 10-year-olds from families in need, said John Hagen, one of the organizers.

Plenty of volunteers from the Knights of Columbus lent their abilities to the event.

“Everybody’s willing to help out,” he said.

They also had help from the Fort Huachuca Widowed Support Group, who provided hundreds of stuffed toys, he said.

Mounds of stuffed bears, bunnies, cartoon characters and some more unusual creatures, like pelicans and sharks, were gathered for the event.

Miguel Serna was waiting to begin handing out stuffed animals and characters as a line of 10-year-olds and up began to form. He volunteers for the party every year.  “Because I’m a Knight,” he said. “We try to take care of the kids.”

And this year the event was just as popular as ever. Volunteers estimated the event would draw up to 450 children by the end.

The Tice family was among the many sitting together to have some cookies and conversation after getting their stuffed toys.

Nicholas Tice had a new spotted cheetah, Christopher Tice had a seal and Ryan Tice had a puppy. The three thought of names for their new toys while waiting for Santa.

The Knights of Columbus also raffled gift certificates at the holiday party.
