Holiday events

The Cochise County Youth Orchestra will present its Winter Concert. The performance will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kino Hall, located next to St. Andrew’s Church, 800 Taylor Drive. Admission is free. The orchestra will collect donations of paper and canned goods for the Good Neighbor Alliance at the door. Visit ccyo.info or call David at 220-1166.

A Christmas Cantata, “The Voice of the Shepherd,” will be held on Friday and Saturday, at 7 p.m., at 2100 E. Yaqui St. in Sierra Vista. The event is presented by the Sierra Vista Stake Choir with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints



The 13th annual unorganized Palominas Christmas Parade is scheduled for Dec. 13. The parade starts at the Palominas Trading Post, 10448 S. Highway 92 and Palominas Road. Lineup is at 9:30 to 9:45 a.m., and the parade begins at 10 a.m. A chili cookoff to benefit the Sierra Vista domestic violence shelter will be held at 11 a.m. at the trading post. There is a request $4 donation per cup. The event is sponsored by the Palominas Trading Post and the High Desert Pod. The Bisbee Senior Center Christmas Party will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The turkey and ham meal will cost $14 per person. Bring a cash gift for the Bisbee Firefighters’ Toys for Tots.

The Mule Mountain Democratic Club will hold its annual holiday potluck on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Bisbee Senior Center. Those attending are asked to bring food of their choice: a main dish, salad or dessert. Beverages will be provided. There will be a brief business meeting.

Whetstone

The Nomaden Motorcycle Club, a nonprofit organization, will be hosting a benefit party for one of their own who is a single father who is fighting cancer and has been unable to work for the last two months due to recent radiation treatment. The benefit will take place starting at noon on Saturday at Buddy’s Bar & Grill, located east on Highway 82 from Highway 90. For those unable to attend, donation can be sent to Nomaden International Motorcycle Club Inc.; c/o Cancer Benefit, 137 N. Huachuca Blvd., Suite 5, Huachuca City AZ 85616.

Huachuca City

A 50th anniversary celebration for Huachuca City will be held today, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Sunny’s Cafe on Highway 90 in Huachuca City. The event is a meatloaf dinner party, with coffee or ice tea with one refill. The cost is $2.50 plus tax for residents and former residents, and $6.25 plus extras and tax for non-residents.

Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista Chapter CW P.E.O. Sisterhood will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Kay McCleary with Kathy Jones serving as co-hostess. The program “Friendship ­— Strong Growth in Bonds” will be presented by April Walton. For information call 452-8128.

The Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program, a nonprofit organization providing services to the elderly, disabled and homebound residents of Sierra Vista and nearby rural communities, is recruiting volunteers who are willing to give a few hours of their week to reach out and help their neighbors. For more information call, 459-8146.

The United Way of Sierra Vista and Cochise County has started its 2008 campaign in an effort to help a variety of local agencies. The United Way also is asking the public to take a survey to help the local Board of Directors determine areas where the undesignated funds could be applied. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is in need of donations of good quality furniture, modern appliances, construction materials, etc. Call the ReStore at 458-0016 to have donations picked up. The ReStore is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is located at 1234 E. Fry Blvd.

The Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources, or CANTER, is seeking new volunteers to be horse handlers and side walkers to help handicapped riders in morning programs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Call 234-3759, 803-7107 or e-mail wildfolk@cox.net to get involved.

Stampede USA will hold a Christmas benefit for Cell Phones for Soldiers, the Good Neighbor Alliance and Toys for Tots on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 3680 E. Fry Blvd. The group’s Sierra Vista and Nogales chapters will be collecting cell phones, chargers, accessories, nonperishable food items and new and unwrapped toys. Call Tom Swartz at 458-2400, or Jacqueline Parks at 227-3458.

A pre-holiday sale will be held on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Friends of the Library book sale. Everything will be half price. The store is located left of the library’s main entrance.
