SIERRA VISTA — The Buena Colt wrestling team, getting back-to-back pins from Alex Watson (125), David Strebe (130) and team captain Brent Madden (135), broke open a close match and went on to defeat the visiting Class 4A Sahuaro Cougars, 45-27, at Buena High School Wednesday evening.

The win improved the Colts’ record to 4-0 on the season. Sahuaro fell to 1-1 after beating Flowing Wells last week.

The Cougars took a 13-12 lead after the first five bouts, two of which Buena won. One was on a 40-second pin by senior heavyweight Robert Ellis, the other a forfeit win by Cody Huston at 103 pounds.

Watson pulled the Colts ahead for good with a 2:52 fall over Josh Oppel that put the host team up 18-13. David Strebe, wrestling very aggressively with his opponent, Nathan Herrera, put the visitor away with 20 seconds to wrestle in the second period, pinning him in 3:40.

Madden took his opponent, Fernando Aguilar, to the mat in eight seconds and had him pinned 15 seconds later that gave the Colts a 30-13 lead. Madden’s pin was the fastest of the six pins in the match.

After a loss at 140 pounds, Ian Beauregard won a close, aggressive bout with the Cougars’ Tyler Streeter. Beauregard was down 4-3 with under 20 seconds to go before getting a reversal that gave him a 5-4 win.

Buena lost at the 152-pound weight class , but picked up a forfeit win from Buena’s other team captain, Emilio Gonzalez, at the 160-pound weight class, and picked up a pin from Carl Larimer at 171 that ended the scoring for the Colts.

“Some of our younger wrestlers still need some fundamental technique work,” Buena coach Dan Southard said. “But they are coming along. Most of them are either freshman or sophomores.

“They (Sahuaro) have a three or four very tough wrestlers. They defeated Flowing Wells last week and we knew they had some good wrestlers.”

Buena will travel to Douglas Wednesday for a multi-meet with Tucson High, Catalina and Douglas before heading to Las Cruces for the Las Cruces Invitational Dec. 12-13.

Junior Varsity

The Buena junior varsity team defeated the Sahuaro junior varsity, 48-30. All 14 weight classes were won by either pins or forfeits.

" Good job you guys(and ladies, emily). While some wrestlers still have some learning to do, that's always how it is with any sport. You really never stop learning. And it looks to me like every one of you are 'Beasts'. Keep kickin em guys. "

" Glad you won but I still dont see it. Too many mistakes on easy stuff. Maybe it's experience but except for a token dudes I don't seen animalistic in the wrestlin. Work on your weaknesses, its only gets tougher. You guys haven't faced tough competition yet and you arredy makin mistakes. Can't say your "Beasts" yet but wish you luck in Cruces and when Sunnyside come home. We see how many "Beasts" Buena got then. HA HA.. "
