BISBEE — Bisbee’s mayor-elect Jack Porter will be taking the gavel from outgoing mayor Ron Oertle in a special ceremony to be held tonight during a City Council meeting.

Porter, 55, won the seat in September during the primary election with close to 63 percent of the vote. He resigned from the Ward 1 council seat he held in April to run for mayor.

Porter ran on a platform of energy conservation, fiscal conservancy, and road and sidewalk repair.

Soon after Porter’s resignation, Boyd Nicholl was appointed to the vacated seat by the council.

Earlier in the year, the council appointed Ken Budge to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated by Maynard Kreps who resigned last December.

According to the city charter, the appointees had to run in the primary election and win their seats by a majority of votes. Budge, who ran for a four-year term, and Nicholl, who ran for the two remaining years of the term of office, ran unopposed for their council seats as did longtime Ward 3 Councilman Bennie Scott.

Ward 2 Councilwoman Luche Giacomino soundly won her bid for re-election to a third term beating opponent Jeff Harris with 61 percent of the vote.

The four council members also will be sworn in by Judge David Morales.

Before passing the gavel to Porter, Oertle will make a few remarks to the residents of Bisbee. The council and mayor will then be seated and the business of the day will start with the discussion of the proposed appointment of Boyd Nicholl as mayor pro tempore.

The council also will discuss the appointment of Ray Rogers and Boyd Nicholl to the finance committee.

In other business, Larry Fester will present the annual audit of the 2007-08 fiscal year.

After the meeting, a reception for the new officials will be held.

Bisbee council meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. at City Hall on Arizona Street.

" So what are the chances that the promised road repairs are going to take place? Every day that I have to drive down these streets makes the city of Bisbee just a little more unattractive to live in. "

" Jack Porter is a good man. Hopefully the city council will support him. Together they can make great improvements for the overall benefit of the city. "
