Applications for fuelwood permits available Monday

Published/Last Modified on Sunday, Nov 30, 2008 - 05:15:33 am MST

SIERRA VISTA — Beginning Monday, the Sierra Vista Ranger District is offering free use firewood permits to the public.

Wood available consists primarily of manzanita, with small amounts of oak and juniper, according to the U.S. Forest Service. All wood is dead and on the ground.

Fuelwood is available as a result of fuel reduction activities to decrease wildfire spread and intensity, the Forest Service said.

The collection areas are located on the west side of the Huachuca Mountains, near the San Rafael Valley and can be accessed by a variety of routes. The Lochiel Collection Area is located along Forest Road 61, between the communities of Lochiel and Duquesne, east of Nogales. The Mowry Collection Area is located along Forest Road 214 and can be accessed from Patagonia and the Canelo Hills/Parker Canyon Lake areas.

Application for half a cord and full cord permits will be available at the district office beginning Monday through March 31. Permits are free, with a limit of one cord per household, per year.

Applications may be obtained Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sierra Vista Ranger District, 5990 S. Highway 92, between Ramsey and Carr Canyon roads, or the Nogales Ranger District at 303 Old Tucson Road in Nogales.

The cutting area will open Monday through March 31.

For information, call the Sierra Vista Ranger District at 378-0311 or the Nogales Ranger District at (520) 281-2996.
