Buena girls finish 2-2 in Bean
TUCSON — The Buena girls soccer team evened its record in the Brandon Bean Tournament with two wins against Pusch Ridge and Palo Verde on Friday.
In the first game, the Colts shut out the Lions 2-0. Buena’s two goals were scored by Stephanie Combs in the 25th minute, with an assist by Mary Monnard, and Susan Hansen in the 31st minute, with an assist by Rachel Shatto.
Buena had a total of 17 shots on the night and five corner kicks while Pusch Ridge finished with just three shots and two corner kicks. Goalkeeper Venesse Morales had three saves.
In the second game, the Colts beat the Titans 3-1. Autumn Dapico socred the first goal in just the second minute of the game off an assist from Molley Ward.
Both teams were quiet until the 34th minute when Buena’s Amanda Buttner scored off a direct kick as the seconds wind down to end the fist half.
Dapico scored her second goal of the game in the 41st minute, and Palo Verde scored its lone goal in the 49th minute.
The Colts had four corner kicks and 15 shots to the Titans’ six. Morales finished with three saves.
“We got off a lot more shots today,” Piduch said.
“For both games, we really dominated with our communication, our ability to stay composed and be able to pass between each other. That’s what we lacked in the last game against Douglas.”
The Colts will not be advancing in the tournament, which continues today, but Piduch said she was happy with how the team improved during the past week.
“Those shots on goal, we were able to follow up on those rebounds,” she said. “This team has really improved on a lot of the simple things: talking, passing, following our rebounds. We just played well today. I was so proud of the girls in both games.”
