Hold off late flurry

SIERRA VISTA — Buena goalkeeper Josh Rieffer didn’t know there were just 10 seconds on the clock.

A Douglas forward had just crossed the ball near the goal, and Rieffer tipped it away, only to see the carom fall on the toe of another onrushing Bulldog. Buena defender David Sainz was next to Rieffer trying to help the Colts hold on to their 2-1 lead.

Rieffer scrambled after the next shot, and landed chest-first on the ball as time expired.

“I thought there was like, five minutes left,” Rieffer said. “I kicked it out and the buzzer rang.”

Douglas scored early in the game on a free kick by Tony Lopez with just more than 21 minutes to play in the half. The Colts came back to tie it at 15:30, scoring on a pass to the middle from Cohen Faucett to J.C. Henson.

Buena took the lead with two minutes to play in the half when Ross Adeli passed to Decklan Fulton, who shot a bullet to the back corner of the net.

“It’s a great feeling,” Buena head coach Medhat Abuhantash said. “We played the same tonight as we did against Nogales.”

Buena scrimmaged Nogales last Friday and shut out the team 5-0, even though an official score wasn’t kept. The Colts scored four of their goals in the first half, and Adeli finished the night with two goals, Ruben Teran with one, Fulton with one and Sebastian Ariza with one.

Abuhantash said his team was agressive and challenged every ball, making it a good start to the season. He was also glad to see his team play in similar fashion in the home opener after the team’s 2-0 loss to Salpointe on Monday night in opening play of the Brandon Bean tournament.

“Salpointe did what we did tonight,” Abuhantash said. “They came out aggressive, and I told the kids tonight that coming out aggressive was the only way to get (Douglas) off their game, being able to anticipate.”

Both of Salpointe’s goals came early in the first half, but Buena held the always dominant Lancers in the second half.

“We knew after Salpointe what mistakes we needed to fix to get the victory today,” Rieffer said. “And we came in and made those changes.”

Buena had seven shots on goal in the second half of the game against Douglas, but couldn’t manage to put any of them into the net. Adeli came close with six minutes to play on a head shot the goal keeper, Meoqui Skinner, reached up and slapped away. Douglas threatened late in the game as time ticked away on shots my Ricky Smith and Ramon Acosta that sailed wide of the posts.

The Colts totaled 11 shots on goal Tuesday night, Henson with four Fulton with three, Teran with two and Adeli with two.

The team had five corner kicks and Rieffer finished with six saves.

“My teammates were the ones who did all the work today,” Rieffer said.

Buena continues in the Brandon Bean tournament Friday at Cienega in Tucson against Pusch Ridge at 10:30 a.m. and Palo Verde at 4:30 p.m.

" as far as spectator down here, you seriously need to experience the soccer world outside the united states. i mean if your going to go watch, get used to the manners and style in which crowds are. they are rude, and it will continue to be that way. Its kinda funny how one would not complain about how the crowds are the same at baseball games, but oh, its just part of the game they say? yeah same principle here. "

" Yes i agree with mr. disgruntled teamate, really #8 was yelling "stick" a common soccer term which means to attack the ball. Having spent two months training with a professional soccer program in Britain I should know. Now i thought this was a country that accepted other cultures, but obviously people tend to be very blind sighted. Just as a distgruntled teamate would say, I just find it hard to believe that the young #8 had any intentions of being rude or harmful to the other team. "

" I have known #8 for quite some time now and i have found him to be quite an inspiration to the team and the game in general. He is quite the player and the teams, both boys and girls, seem to have taken well to him. Although he likes to have a joke from time to time like the rest of us, he still has a great respect for the game and i find it hard to believe that any of his actions could have been done with intended harm. "

" Cody, it was not what you were yelling. It was number 8, and he was making fun of a player on the other team that got hurt. Then others followed his sick lead. Ask the girls if they enjoy listening to half the junk you guys yell--they will tell you it is annoying. Not much that I heard yelled was team spirited, it was mean and ugly. Maybe the boys on varsity need to pick a better roll model, because #8 is NOT a roll model-his behavior was disgraceful to the sport, His team, and Buena. "

" Nice article. I think these young guys are great and am proud of them though I don't know them. I have met Adeli and what a nice young gentleman he is. Great articles and I love to see them. It goes to show that Buena does have something the kids can do, they don't have to do drugs and join gangs. They have an option. Good job! I am curious how did the team do last year? Anyone know? "

" i was at the game and i am aware what was said, i heard a couple of the boys shouting stick when a buena girl possesed the ball from the opposition, i dont understand why this is such a big issue. "

" Great games. Now please teach some of the boys how to act while in the stands watching the girls play.Sportsmanship is not just for on the field but how one conducts themselves off.If what I observed last night during the girls game is a representation of the boys varsity team then the coach as a lot of work ahead of him.It was brought to the attention of a person in the sports department,I was assured it would be dealt with.As a parent I want to be able to watch my child play and not hear the crap.
