Thoughts to imagine and sizing up the golden rule

Published/Last Modified on Monday, Nov 24, 2008 - 05:16:32 am MST

To the Editor:

This is to the supporters of the “Sanctity of Marriage” proposition.

One of The Beatles wrote a song “Imagine” some time ago that has since become a beloved anthem for those seeking peace. I would like to borrow from that imagery at this time.

Imagine that you live in a world where homosexuality is the “norm.” You are expected to love a member of your own sex. Could you do this? Would you do this? Homosexuals are asked to do the equivalent of this every day.

Imagine that you were not able to conform and that you fell in love with a member of the opposite sex. Now imagine that the majority of this same world denied you the right to marry the person who was your world. How would you feel? What would you do?

Imagine, as well, that your son or you daughter is gay or a lesbian. Would you deny them the joy of a committed long-term relationship and the sanctity of marriage?

Now, imagine that it is judgment day and you are standing before a just and compassionate God. Can you reconcile your attitude and behavior with his golden rule?

" The Golden Rule is a Christian principle and does not apply to marriage. Same-sex relationships are clearly outlawed in the Bible. It's ridiculous for gays to try to apply Christian religious principles to a practice God abhors. I won't ever understand how a group of people who largely shuns and ridicules the church would want to partake in a ceremony (marriage) that is rooted in the church. God performed the first marriage between Adam and Eve - not Adam and Steve! "

" How about all of us believers just leave this matter up to the Lord as he instructed us to do? He knows what is going to happen. Do not worry about yourself in constilation with worldly events. Do your part as a faithful servant and let the Lord turn other's hearts. It is already written. "

    " Hello,
This subject will never be exhausted on this Earth. It takes so much emotion and apples out of everyones baskets. I beleive in Jesus as my savior because, he has given me times greater than any high ever! But I also believe that we are all imperfect and that we all fall short. It is not what you do on this earth that Jesus cares so much about, but that you believe in him. Why do so many people let others get in the way of faith? Why is it everyone against everyone else? "

" Nature established the rules. Long ago civilisations recognized them by insituting marriages. Nature also causes variations and some 2 or 3 percent fall outside these rules. Most civilisations are well on their to recognizing this by providing for civil unions which carry all of the rights and priviliges of marriages but under a different name. A very small number of radical homosexuals are incensing and polarizing people by shoving their homosexuality into our faces with outrageous behaviors and demands. Homosexuals can't change who and what they are, so why expect the rest of us to? "

" Roberta Sandburg, I imagine that you consider yourself a christian by the comment of standing before God. Now imagine reading your bible and finding that being a homosexual is an abhorration in the eye's of the Lord. I dont have to imagine, that is what the bible states. "

" Christianity is not about love or acceptance or even benign neglect. It is about a bronze-age god whose message did not get lost in translation: embrace and worship Me or be shunned by Me and tortured for eternity. It was the same message from other bronze-age gods. Do unto others? A mispronunciation, a pretty little blip. You cannot both pay attention and be fooled by the shiny, brittle foil wrapping. Do something for the less fortunate to celebrate this mid-winter festival. Do unto all others and expand your heart. The food banks need help just now. "
