Salpointe football put on probation

Tucson, Buena left for automatic berth

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Nov 19, 2008 - 05:12:34 am MST

SIERRA VISTA —The Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Executive Board placed Tucson Salpointe Catholic’s football program on probation Tuesday for recruiting violations.

The Arizona Republic, on its Web site Tuesday, reported that Salpointe Catholic recruited an eighth grade student last year.

The probation will last one season starting in 2009, allowing the Lancers to continue participating in this season’s Class 5A Division I state tournament. Salpointe defeated Mesa 55-28 in the opening round of the state playoffs and will play Mesa Red Mountain Friday night in the state semifinals.

Salpointe Catholic will be allowed to play its regular season schedule next year, but will not be able to participate in the 2009 playoffs.

According to The Arizona Republic it was a Salpointe freshman coach who allegedly recruited the player.

Salpointe Catholic, which recently had its appeal to drop from the Southern Region Division I to Division II denied, plays in the same region and division as Buena and Tucson High.

If the AIA elects to keep the 5A Southern Region Division I as a three-team region, that region’s automatic playoff berth would then be decided by whichever team wins the Buena-Tucson High contest.

“What I am waiting to see is what, if anything, the AIA is going to do as far as the automatic berth to the state football playoffs is concerned,” Buena athletic director Greg Duce said.

" Besides, I am pretty sure most of the community is supporting, and still no wins. Look at the soccer teams! barely anyone watches their games, when I was in Buena most half of the school seriously could care less if we even had a soccer team, and they won A LOT of games, so what's your point? It sure is easy enough to blame it on people not supporting. You all need to start getting ready NOW! while you sit at home hanging out, them tucson schools are busy getting in the weight room. "

" Yeah buddy, quit blaming it on other people, when I played and we lost games we knew we lost them games bacause we didn't execute. You'll learn later on in life, life is hard buddy and you have to make things happen yourself, and things take a lot more work to accomplish than you would think. And yes, just beat Tucson, for crying out loud! is that too much to ask? we used to beat them pretty constantly they've always been creampuffs, are you telling me you think you and your teamates are also creampuffs? "

" Heartfelt, we would love to give you all a little love and encouragement, but since your coach made all of the practices closed, that makes it pretty hard to do! Quit feeling sorry for yourself and get in the weightroom. "

" I have to agree. 95% of the issue with football isnt the players or the coaches its YOU as supporters. No one understands what we go through as players. We try our hardest everyday and are always putting it on the line but thats never good enough for you. So since you all are so quick to judge and make comments why dont you put pads on and "just beat tucson high" since you think it just so easy. The community needs a reality check bad. Give us more credit and encouragement and maybe wed produce. "

" Wow! Make Tucson High ineligible? A good deal? That's a great way to support the team. If your going to make comments like that don't even worry about the football team. Don't support us or anything. I'm not the one for too much talk and thats all yall do in the comments. Yall are basically saying having a 1-9 season is a success as long as you go to the playoffs. I'd hope you expect more. I wish somebody in the community would hope we improve. Better yet give us bad comments at least we know you want somethin done "

" WOW! there you go guys maybe this is the break you guys need to get your morale up and go to state by just beating tucson high!!!!!! and you guys have proven to be able to do that, but beware, Tucson is thinking the same thing about you guys and I am pretty sure they are pretty stoked about this also and are planning on beating you guys as I type this!!! C'mon Buena! make next year's motto "Beat Tucson!!!"
    TUSCON IS GOING DOWN!!!!! "
