The Arizona Republic, on its Web site Tuesday, reported that Salpointe Catholic recruited an eighth grade student last year.
The probation will last one season starting in 2009, allowing the Lancers to continue participating in this season’s Class 5A Division I state tournament. Salpointe defeated Mesa 55-28 in the opening round of the state playoffs and will play Mesa Red Mountain Friday night in the state semifinals.

Salpointe Catholic will be allowed to play its regular season schedule next year, but will not be able to participate in the 2009 playoffs.
According to The Arizona Republic it was a Salpointe freshman coach who allegedly recruited the player.
Salpointe Catholic, which recently had its appeal to drop from the Southern Region Division I to Division II denied, plays in the same region and division as Buena and Tucson High.
If the AIA elects to keep the 5A Southern Region Division I as a three-team region, that region’s automatic playoff berth would then be decided by whichever team wins the Buena-Tucson High contest.
“What I am waiting to see is what, if anything, the AIA is going to do as far as the automatic berth to the state football playoffs is concerned,” Buena athletic director Greg Duce said.
