3-team 5A Southern D-I likely

The Class 5A Conference Executive Board denied Salpointe Catholic’s appeal to drop from the Southern Region’s Division I to the region’s Division II in a meeting held Thursday in Phoenix.

“All the schools that have applied to drop from a Division I status to a Division II status have been denied,” Class 5A Executive Board President and Buena Principal Tad Bloss said after Thursday’s meeting.

“Those schools now have one more chance for getting their appeal overturned, that being on Monday with the Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board,” Bloss said.

Casa Grande’s appeal to be moved from the Southern Region was approved and they will now be Division I in the Pima Region along with Mesa Desert Ridge, Mesa Skyline and Mesa Westwood.

That leaves a three-team Southern Region Division I consisting of Buena, Salpointe Catholic and Tucson High with the winner between those three teams earning an automatic berth to state tournaments effective in the 2009-2010 school year.

No mention was made of any Phoenix area team being moved down to Division I of the Southern Region.

In related matters regarding scheduling, Buena Athletic Director Greg Duce attended the 5A Southern Region’s Athletic Director’s meeting Wednesday and a vote was made in regards to computer scheduling outside the region’s “must play” games.

“It was voted on and approved to allow schools to pick two non-region games and the other two non-region games will be filled in by the computer in regards to the football schedule,” Duce said.

It has not been determined what two schools Buena football coach Kent Holland will request to play.

As for the computer generated schools put on a team’s schedule, Duce said that travel will be used as a major criteria.

For the other sports, there is nothing in the mill for determining non-region games as yet.

" Hey Dan, I like how you what to put the team down in this article, then try to have spirit in the "Salpointe probation" article. Your no help to any side. Also the varsoty hasnt beat them since 1993. The jv & freshman however have beat them several times since then. '04 was the last time. freshman last yr only lost by a point. "

" You might want to check your facts. This year we were second to last. Last year we were second in the division. The year before that we were in a bigger league and finished 4th of 7. The year before that we were in the exact same spot. I dont think we should settle for that and I am sure the new coaching staff will get them going in the right direction but if your going to sit around and put the program down at least know what your talking about. Your not part of the solution but part oftheproblem. "

" LOL!!!! "The only team we have problems beating is Salpointe" Niiiice! you think!? I would say we haven't just had "problems" beating Salpointe, when was the last time we beat them guys? was I even born yet? and how conformist of you is it to just think it is okay to beat Tucson high every year.... talk to any person from the Tucson area and they will tell you, beating Tucson High is nothing to brag about, but like my buddy "writing on the wall" said, it's "rebuilding" time, only it seems to be every year! "

" Tucson High got lucky? If you were there, as I was, we started out fairly well as we typically do. However, because of our lack of depth, the guys who go both ways, seven of them to be exact, got tired and we were outscored 28-0 in a 13 minute span! As far as always finishing second in the region, please look at the last three years, we have finished no better than second from the bottom each year. Oh, my bad, this was a rebuilding year! Ouch! "

" Why dont you give the coaching staff time to establish the program before you say they cant compete in their region. They were second in the region last season so obviouslly they can compete in that region. Also what about the other sports that do well having to go to Phoenix twice a week for games and having to cut out of school early. Dont act like your an expert on Buena sports and then spout out we should move to the Phoenix region it makes you look ignorant. "

To writing on the wall wrote on Nov 17, 2008 9:48 AM:

" Yes we can compete in this region. And do you remember this is a school? There is a certain amount time you have to be in school, and going to Phoenix every other weekend isnt going to fit that amount of time. We're just fine in this region. We're always 2nd in region, Tucson High just got lucky this yr. We beat them every year. The only team we have problems beating is Salpointe. The AIA wouldnt allow us to move either "

writing on the wall wrote on Nov 16, 2008 4:42 PM:

" The point that I am trying to make here is that this program cannot COMPETE in the region we are in now. I fully understand, moron, that the Pima region is in Phoenix. How else do you expect to win more than two games a year where we are now?. I say move a little more money into the fuel budget and lets move to a Phoenix region. Maybe then we will go to 4 and 6. Just a thought. "

" Your comment is completely stupid & illiterate. The Pima Region is in Phoenix. We leave no where near Phoenix. Do you know why Casa Grande moved to the Pima Region?Maybe when you know all the facts, you can put two & two together..idiot. "

writing on the wall wrote on Nov 15, 2008 10:13 PM:

" This football program has as much business competing against a well-established, overly funded, booster rich team as Salpointe than an Independant Party candidate has winning the Presidential race. Duce and Bloss need to leave while the time is ripe. Why didn't they appeal to the AIA to move to the Pima Region so that we could play the sisters of the poor? PATHETIC! "
