A comment in OYM on Oct. 24 stated that America will become a Third World country like Darfur if Obama is elected because “He’s a quarter Arab, a quarter African-Negro and half white with no experience.” Darfur is not a country, but a province in Sudan. Arab is not a racial term, but a linguistic one.

We have the same problem with relentlessly barking dogs in Bisbee. We’ve called animal control many times to no avail.
NOV. 1
A Sept. 5 article by Bill Hess discussed the problems with teacher retention. Our government and union-run schools have been providing inferior education compared with other countries. We discourage initiative and achievement by holding back our brightest to wait for the slowest to catch up. It’s politically correct. Many current or prospective teachers reject the profession due to the super liberal union agenda pushing the gay agenda, as it differs from their beliefs. I am told of one teacher who had to be taken to court and evicted for failure to pay rent. We need more charter or Christian schools without union controls or emphasis on standardized test passing for all as the goal.
I just received another unwanted robocall from the McCain campaign. I wish McCain and his Rovian tacticians would realize that every time I get a robocall claiming Obama is affiliated with “radical groups like,” every time I see/hear another negative attack ad on TV or radio, every time I hear Palin on the news insinuating that Obama supports terrorists, I go online and send Obama another $20. Yeah, I’m ready for a change.
I just found out the Knights of Columbus donated more than $120,000 to the campaign to permanently write discrimination into our state constitution in the name of “protecting marriage.” The Knights of Columbus have just lost my support. No more bingo dollars from me. No more donations or support for their charity drives. Also, since I book our company’s holiday parties, no more banquets at the Knight’s hall. Equality should mean just that: equality. Shame on them. I just want them to know I also vote with my dollars and support.
I was sitting in Wal-Mart’s parking lot the other day waiting on my wife who was inside shopping and I saw at least six or eight people get out of their car, leave the doors unlocked and go into the store. I don’t know if they took their keys, however it’s no wonder so many cars are stolen. There’s the big write-up in the paper this morning: Five Dodge pickups swiped just in the last few days. Thieves are experts at hot-wiring and driving the car away. Wake up folks. Lock your car.
According to the news, they’re having this drug war on the border and we’re worried about it infiltrating into the U.S. Well, it sure isn’t stopping them from coming across to go shopping. There are hundreds of them in the area, all through Wal-Mart and everything and acting like there’s nothing wrong. Maybe they can stay home and take care of their problems instead of coming here. We can’t afford to shop in Sierra Vista, but they can. I have to go to Tucson to get a decent deal.
No one suggested the man in Willcox vandalized his own property and faked being threatened. He was victimized no matter who did it. It was suggested the “American-hating lefties” or radical socialists did it to stir up fear and resentment and swing the election left. It wouldn’t be the first time. There have been several incidents of people faking racial attacks and/or attacking racially to put the blame on the other side. It would be stupid of anyone who was racist to make this kind of attack and strengthen the sympathy for the community they are attacking. A vast majority of Americans in this day and age just want the Ku Klux Klan and their stupidity to disappear with time. The sooner the better.
This is for the person who complained about the newsprint rubbing off on their clothes. I used to have this problem as well, though it has improved dramatically since I stopped spreading the newspaper out on the floor and rolling around on it like a dog.
NOV. 2
Still slapping that kid around after all these years, and you people still can’t figure out that they were hunting children? Perhaps there should be an additional reference when prosecuting “predator,” or are you folks at the “love-letter” Sierra Vista Herald complicit?
Regular gas in Tucson — $2.39 per gallon. In Sierra Vista, $2.89 per gallon. Maybe it’s time for another investigation by the attorney general. This is getting ridiculous.
I just read the editorial in today’s newspaper and it said we should look at the 11 proposition proposals on the ballot. There are only eight. I think you need a new proofreader.
Editor’s note: There were eight state propositions, but also three other issues on the Sierra Vista ballot that shouldn’t have been referred to as propositions — the city’s sale of property, the Southwest Gas issue and the Sierra Vista school budget override.
NOV. 3
OK, the Republicans have lost the election big time. So the next question is: What changes the GOP will make to remain viable? It has transformed into the party of the unreasonable right, a haven for racists and reactionaries, and this seems likely to accelerate as a result of defeat. This poses a serious problem for moderates who have lived the last eight years with their head in the sand, denying the lies and incompetence of G.W. Bush. The American people deserve the truth and intelligent leadership. Will the GOP make the necessary changes or become solidly the party of hate and intolerance, constantly whining they been done wrong? At some point we need to quit tolerating the intolerant. Hopefully the time is now.
I’m a substitute teacher and go to all the schools. I was shocked to hear a cafeteria manager at one elementary school yell at one of her employees so loud. This is not the first time there, so I commented to one of the other employees about this and he said that’s nothing. The students are all scared to death of her. Why do they have people like that working for the schools?
Let me add my two cents to the price of gas in Sierra Vista. Recently I went to Pinetop. All the cities and towns I drove through, such as Safford, Thatcher, Globe and Pinetop, had gas that was cheaper than gas in Sierra Vista. When I left Pinetop two weeks ago gas there was $2.89. When I got to Sierra Vista, it was $3.22. Now you tell me it’s the distributors causing the problem? I don’t think so, because I don’t think Pinetop is on the main line for oil delivery.
Boy, am I sick of all the political stuff. Boy, am I sick of all the right-wing religious stuff. They give Christianity a bad name. One must realize that when you hear someone say that they are a “compassionate conservative” it is pretty much a lie. Bush said it. Billy Kristol of the New York Times makes the claim for himself. I don’t think so. He’s got the same smirk on his face that G.W.B. does. I do hear that flushing sound, though. The GOP going down the toilet.
It’s the day before the election and I just finished reading your large article on Page A8 about the fact that statistically your vote doesn’t really matter. I’m sure most would agree this article is a disservice to the reading public. If many who read this took it to heart across the nation, it could possibly keep millions from the polls, and statistically that would matter! What a sorry article and shame on you for publishing it on Nov. 3.
Editor’s note: Our intention was not to discourage people from voting. Instead, it was providing a story about a study that took a mathematical look at the election.
Dear Gas City: It’s Nov. 1 and you have Christmas decorations in front of your business. There are two holidays on the calendar before Christmas, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. This is demeaning to veterans and to all those who celebrate Thanksgiving. Please take them down and put them back up after Thanksgiving. Everyone else who is disgusted at seeing these decorations so early, please let your feelings known.
Just heard via the TV that Senator Obama has lost his beloved maternal grandmother to cancer. Fortunately, he was able to see her a few days ago but, now she is gone. She was the person who was responsible for most of his growing period and apparently did a fine job with her grandson whose birth parents had other things to go with their lives. My sympathy is extended to the senator and his family.
