Colts win finale at Casa Grande

CASA GRANDE — Buena’s disappointing season ended with great promise and a bittersweet sendoff for the seniors.

Friday night’s 25-6 win over Casa Grande assured the 2-8 Colts they would not finish in the cellar of the Class 5A Southern Region Division I, and according to first-year head coach Kent Holland, it was the first time in his five years in the program a Buena defense has held a team scoreless.

Casa Grande’s lone score came on a 64-yard punt return by Brodrick Thompson with 7:09 to play in the third quarter.

“The defense rose up and pitched a shutout,” Holland said. “They allowed just 89 total yards — that’s just phenomenal.”

Junior linebacker DeAndre Little, with nine tackles, led a Buena defense that did not allow the Cougar offense a first down for 32 minutes of gametime, sacked Casa Grande quarterbacks four times and picked them off three times.

Offensively, the Colts got off to a quick start behind junior quarterback J.T. May, making only his second varsity start.

An interception by Gabe Samuels on the Cougars’ first possession gave May a short field to work with and he quickly took advantage, hitting Ryan Witt cutting across the middle. His defender went for the ball and missed and Witt strode untouched to the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown.

Buena took a two-score edge after senior Troy Haymore intercepted a Ben Rodriguez pass and returned it to the Buena 43. Buena’s ensuing drive was on the brink of stalling, facing a fourth-and-7 from the Casa Grande 14. May again looked for Witt, who hauled it in near the left corner of the end zone. Jon Sayler made the point after and Buena held a 13-0 lead with a minute to go in the first.

With the Cougars mindful of the playmaking ability of Buena wide receiver DeChé Milburn and often double-teaming him, May looked to a secondary receiver and found one in senior tight end Billy Grant. May had replaced Grant as the starting quarterback in the second half of a loss at Tucson High two weeks ago, and Grant finished his Buena career in strong fashion as a tight end, catching five balls for 63 yards — all in the first half.

In fact, all of Buena’s passing yards came in the first half. May was 10-of-15 for 133 yards at the break, but 0-for-4 with two interceptions thereafter.

“I don’t really know what happened,” May said. “I’m still wondering that myself.”

Holland said the difference was the pressure Casa Grande applied in the second half.

“They were getting to J.T. and he was getting a little rattled,” Holland said. “But it’s only his second game as a starter and he did a good job leading the team and that’s what you look for in a quarterback.”

Most surprisingly, Buena’s running game, which had been held to an abysmal 42 yards per game on the season, came alive in the finale. Starter Trey Brown rushed nine times for 41 yards before injuring his ankle. His replacement, Josh Miller broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run that made it 19-0 going into halftime.

As the Buena passing game struggled in the second half, Holland turned to his running game to shut the door on the Cougars.

Xavier Cooper, who all season had been lighting up JV opponents with his diminutive stature and blazing speed, made his first varsity carry a memorable one, racing 48 yards off tackle to paydirt to make it 25-6 with six minutes to play.

As a team, Buena rushed for 241 yards, more than half of their season total.

“Our defense stymied them and our offensive line took over the game,” Holland said.

May said the victory was a testament to focus and dedication.

“It was hard work all week in practice and wanting to win for the seniors,” he said. “It was really everybody pushing to pick it up, for the team, for the family.”

After the victory, Holland addressed his team and then separately spoke to his seniors under a goal post.

“I told them it wasn’t how they wanted it to end,” Holland said. “Going in to this season they wanted to be the first senior class to lead this team to the playoffs in over a decade. But I told them, you finished on a positive note, you go out a winner. And, you learn more from trying situations and controversy. Going into life they’re going to know a lot about trying situations and controversy — they’re a good group.”

" Hello to you Dan. I hope you feel better. Since you know so much about other coaches maybe you should work on yourself instead of telling us how inept we are. Thanks Pal what do you have to offer the program? As for 7?'s we return Milburn and Kelley who started the whole season and we also return Kelley. We have Little, Ronnel, who were both all region players as well as Tenny who started the whole second half of the season as well as Dunn and Hubie. Maybe we know a little more about our team than a wannabe. "

" It's easy to think you know whats best for the program from the stands or listening to the radio. What are you doing to fix it? Absolutely nothing but putting these kids down and their coaches when they are the only ones contributing to the program. You know what they say. If your not attempting to be part of the solution your part of the problem. Supposed fans like you have done nothing to help the program and if you are alum of Buena it's no wonder the program has suffered. Your lack of spirit and loyalty is disgusting. "

" Cant speak for Dan but I am just facing the facts. We should have a dominate team with all the kids in the school. Colt backer you named five players on defense. your line is leaving. the only DB that was a factor that is coming back is #2. the rest of the so call lock down is gone haymore, foster, and seriago. the lbs leave, joseph, lane, wallace, saylor. Are those guys JV move ups. "

" BUT! I still do hope you guys do well next year though, you would think that if you guys were so annoyed with the negativity you would try and prove everyone negative wrong and win some football games! A win is a win? sure, you go on the rest of your life telling yourself that, and see where that takes you! good luck with that conformist philosophy. Oh yeah I'll be "looking forward to next year" as that seems to be the theme around this town, it's always the "next year" thing, it's getting old. "

Dan wrote on Nov 12, 2008 11:28 PM:

" Dan is not out there helping the coaching staff because dan has been away serving his country. Believe me, the other towns I have been stationed on, I volunteered with the local team's coching staff, and I know you all hate hearing this and it's not trying to be negative or anything, these coaches were for reals, above and beyond anything I have EVER seen in SV, you know..... real coaches! as for the win, congrats! you guys are the equiv of an MMA fighter wanting cred for beating up Kimbo Slice! gimme a break! every year same story. "

" From where I sat it looks like you guys are headed in the right direction. I am looking forward to next year. You played like a team and showed your potential. Who you played didn't matter. It was how you played that mattered and it showed. Good job! I'm a believer and always will be. Challenge to 7?'s and Dan: make nice, without adding the digs. Coach them up armchair coaches! I doubt you have it in you. "

" it funny how everyone comments immediately to diss buena on losses. but not even half the people that write when lose write when we win to at least congratulate us. it doesnt matter who you win agaisnt. a win is a win. "

" Thank you Dan you took the words right out of my mouth. But put away the anointing oil because our city was 2-8. 3000+ students at the school and we cant even get a fivehundred team. "

Dan wrote on Nov 11, 2008 11:29 PM:

" well we all don't write to congratulate because it was Casa Grande they just beat, like I said, these guys get too concerned about he names of the team they are playing, if you were to dress the Sunny Side team in some Rincon or Casa Grande uniforms you would see buena winning somehow, and if you take this casa grande jokers and put them in some iron wood get ups they would be too scared of just think9ing it's iron wood ridge and beat themselves up too badly mentally before the game and not win. "

" Good job Buena. You played good defense and ran the ball all night. I thought this would be a win but you guys played hard and man #5 can hit. #2 locked our WR's out. #33 and #80 are fast. I hope we play you guys again next year. "

SV Resident wrote on Nov 9, 2008 5:38 PM:

" I agree about Casa Grande, but Rincon will be in the 5A South Region next year so they should be them again next year. Buena beat the worse 2 teams in the region this year and didn't show up against Ironwood Ridge, Sunnyside and Salpointe. Three teams they have to face again next year. "

" Good win. It is sad that Casa Grande will not be in the 5A south region next year. "

" Good win Colts. Now why don't all the people who say they know so much about sports here in sierra vista, write in and congratulate the coaching staff on a nice victory. They are so quick to blame after a defeat. It's funny---coaches get way too much blame for victory and way too much blame for defeat..the players play man...good win and good luck..and to all the people who "think" they can coach..please stay out of the "arena".. "

Colts backer wrote on Nov 8, 2008 1:21 PM:

" Great job Colts. Great job Gabe. Coaches its awesome to see things finally come together. Please work hard in the off season as we have some great speed (D.Milburn,X. Cooper,A.Brown,T.Brown,J.Miller,J.Tuttle,R.Witt) coming back. Lets build a line to open lanes. Defensively we bring back most of our LB's (DeAndre,Ronnel and A Betts)our DB's and Tenney and Dunn on the D line. It all happens in the off season. Go Colts and Go Colts Coaches. Start building the dynasty. "
