The Huachuca Area Republican Women’s Club will meet at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center on Monday, starting at 10:30 a.m. for coffee followed by lunch at 11. Huachuca City VFW Post 10342 will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Tuesday, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Sierra Vista
There will be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Children’s Christmas Party on Nov. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 156 Kayetan Drive. A free-will offering will be taken up. The annual Sierra Vista Airport Open House and Fly-In is slated today, from 7 to 11 a.m., at the Municipal Airport. Activities will include the Young Eagle Program, which offers children ages 8-17 an opportunity to fly in a private airplane with a qualified pilot. Call 458-5775.
There will be a Project SAFE (Safety Awareness Family Education) event today, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at Garden Plaza Apartment Clubhouse, 100 Golf Links Road. Nicolosi & Fitch Inc. The Sierra Vista West Rotary Club will have a poker run Nov. 22 to raise funds for service projects in the West End. Bicyclists and motorcyclists can participate. There will be a route for each. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. at the Outback Steakhouse, 99 S. Highway 92. The run will end at the Sorry Gulch Saloon, 526 W. Fry Blvd. The cost is $35 per person and $10 per extra passenger. The Sierra Vista Woman’s Club’s fall fundraiser will be on Nov. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Othback Steakhouse, 99 S. Highway 92. Tickets are $20. The menu will be build-your-own salad, with either shrimp, chicken, steak, and dessert and coffee, tea or soft drink. The Outback donates the food and service for this luncheon and proceeds benefit nursing scholarships at Cochise College & University of Arizona; Music Awards to Buena High School students and other unmet community needs. The Sierra Vista Optimist Club is sponsoring its annual Coats for Kids Drive, which will run through Nov. 24. The collection of coats, sweaters and gloves benefits local school children who are in need of warm winter wear. These garments are distributed through the local schools to those children who need them most. Donation points are: Buzz Breads, 2151 S. Highway 92; Southeast Arizona Association of Realtors, 125 S. The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park is open for bird walks each Sunday morning. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, Huachuca Audubon Society and the Friends of the San Pedro River. Walks depart from the viewing platform at 8 a.m. The park entrance is located on Highway 90 between mileage markers 324 and 325 on the north side of the highway. All tours are free, although donations are invited. The walks are limited to 20 people and are filled on a first come, first served basis. Special walks for large groups and walks on days other than Sunday can be arranged. Contact Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory at 432-1388.
AARP Tax-Aide is looking for donations of old computer equipment. The organization needs three computers that run Windows XP, keyboards and ice with USB connections, preferably, though the group will accept those with PS2 connections. Any wired network equipment, such as switches or Ethernet cables, also is appreciated.
AARP Tax-Aide is seeking volunteers for the 2009 tax season. No previous tax preparation experience necessary, one week of training will be conducted in late January. Each person is required to work one day a week — about five hours — from the first of February through April 15 at the Oscar Yrun Community Center. Join docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River on interpretive walks along the river Saturday. The walks depart from the San Pedro House near Sierra Vista at 9 a.m. Call 459-2555.
