LAVEEN — After struggling mightily on the first day of the Class 5A Division I state golf tournament, the Buena Colts found their stroke on day two and shaved more than 20 strokes off their team total.
The resurgent effort was good enough to take them from 12th on the first day to ninth for the championship tournament.
“When you get out of it a little bit and fall out of the running, you sometimes relax and get into a better mental playing state,” Buena head coach Brenden Root said. “I had hoped to get them to relax like that on day one. But I was glad to see the improvement. Hopefully everyone next year can use this momentum and move forward.”
The Colts lose just one senior from their starting lineup. Logan Canfield made the biggest improvement from first day to second, shooting an 80 on Thursday after a 91 on Wednesday.

Junior David Chung bounced back from an 82 on Wednesday to shoot 74 on Thursday and Logan Daynes was the only Colt to lose strokes from round one to two, going from an 80 to an 83.

SIERRA VISTA — All six of Buena’s relay teams qualified for the 5A state swim meet, which begins today at Mona Plummer pool at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Meanwhile Saturday, the Buena and Tombstone cross country teams and the Bisbee girls take off in the Arizona Interscholastic Association state meet.
The Buena girls figure to have the best bet at a top-five team finish. The Lady Colts come in ranked 18th among cross country teams of all classes and eighth among 5A Division I squads.
The Colts are coming off a region championship last week in Casa Grande, paced by individual winner Jodine Steemers.
Tombstone junior Cody Rosengarten has the best chance of any local runner to win an individual race.
The Class 5A Division I boys race starts at 1 p.m. at the Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix. The 1A/2A boys race is at 1:50, followed by the 5A-I girls race at 2:15 and the 1A/2A girls race closes out the day at 3:05 p.m.
