TUCSON — Any hopes the Buena girls volleyball team had of winning back-to-back matches in the region tournament and taking the 5A Southern automatic berth to state, went up in flames Wednesday night.

The Colts took the first set of their region semifinal matchup with Tucson High 25-18, but dropped the next three 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.

Tucson moves on to tonight’s championship match against Salpointe Catholic and Buena’s season came to an end after a 6-11 regular season.

“This was obviously a pretty devastating loss for us,” Buena head coach Amy Cooper said. “The girls were really hoping to achive their goal of getting to state. Now, they have a better understanding of what it takes to put forth to be successful.”

Britney Hollabaugh, one of four Buena seniors, had a strong showing in her final high school match, pouring on a match-high 14 kills and making four blocks. Another senior, Kacey Bock, was second among Buena hitters with five kills to go with five digs.

Cooper said Tucson’s serving, keyed by Serena Schutt ultimately proved to be the difference.

“They were really aggressive,” Cooper said. “Pretty much every time (Schutt) went to the service line, they went on a five or six point run. You can’t win when you give up that many points in a row continuously.”

Megan Cooper had 14 assists and Sydney Acree nine. Megan Haymore had nine digs.

Colt golfers struggle on day 1

LAVEEN — The Buena boys golf team went into the Class 5A Division I State Tournament with aspirations of a top-five finish.

But after a rough day one, they have their work cut out for them heading into today’s final round.

Colin McCarty led Buena with a first-round 77, good for 27th place overall, and fellow sophomore James Wallace shot a 79 to sit 39th. Those were the only two Colt golfers to break 80 as Buena posted a team score of 318, tied for 11th out of 16 teams with Chandler Basha.

Buena is five points ahead of Dobson with 323 strokes. Buena’s region rival Salpointe fared much better on Wednesday. The Lancers are currently second with 300 strokes, 13 behind leading Chandler Hamilton.

Logan Daynes shot an 80 to place 50th and David Chung shot an 82 to sit 56th to round out the Buena scorers.

Lone senior Logan Canfield shot a 91 and is in 85th place.

The final round at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen tees off this morning.
