SIERRA VISTA —  Responding to 54 calls from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday, Sierra Vista police officers looked into everything from multiple shots being fired into an occupied house to an airplane crash on Libby Army Airfield to the theft of Halloween masks.

On Monday afternoon, Officer Tracy Grady said police responded to a collection of concerns called in by city residents over the  weekend.

One serious incident involved a report of shots fired in the area of Freihage Drive and North Carmichael Avenue.

At 7:41 p.m. on Saturday, officers found 14 .223-caliber rifle casings in a Freihage back alley, Grady noted.

Several rounds struck an occupied residence, but none of the residents were injured, she said, without identifying how many people were in the dwelling or what their ages or gender were.

There are suspects in the case who have not been publicly identified, and the police Special Operations unit is investigating the incident, Grady noted.

About an hour later, at 8:48 p.m., another report of shots being fired in the 3700 block of Miller was called in, but the source was not found, the police spokeswoman said.

On Friday there were two reports of gunshots, one at 9:49 p.m. in the area of Buffalo Soldier Trail and Seventh Street, with no source found and at 10:26 p.m. in the 400 block of South Lenzner, which turned out to be fireworks, Grady said.

At 9:23 a.m., gunfire was reported in the 500 block of Campus Drive but no source for the incident was located, she said.

When an aircraft was coming in for a landing at the Army airfield, the landing gear was not lowered, leading to the aircraft, which was not identified by type, “to skid along on its belly on the runway,” Grady said. It is unknown if the pilot forgot to lower the gear or if there was a mechanical problem.

The incident was reported to the FAA, which has assumed the investigation, and post military officials, she added.

Angela Moncur, the post public affairs officer, said the fort fire department was the first responder to the scene of the accident.

No fuel was spilled, and there was no debris on the runway, from the small two-seater civilian airplane, she said. The pilot and passenger were unhurt, Moncur added.

Grady said during the 72-hour report, there were a number of non-injury vehicles accidents, seven of them involving two vehicles and one one-vehicle.

During the same period there were three hit-and-run reports of a vehicle striking another and leaving the scene, she said.

Reports of criminal damage to seven vehicles in the 500 block of North Lenzner Avenue were also made early Sunday morning. All the vehicles suffered damaged from BBs, probably late Saturday night, the police spokeswoman said, adding a BB gun was also used to shoot a pet cat in the 500 block of Charles Drive.

There were a number of other incidents, including a report of rape, which is being investigated by the police Special Operations unit; two large bags of marijuana, a scale and plastic bags being found in an abandoned vehicle in the area of Seventh Street and Heather Drive; fights, including a couple of incidents between juveniles in the detention center; and, five cases of shoplifting from Friday morning to Monday morning, according to the report.

Perhaps the oddest shoplifting incident took place just before 4 p.m. on Friday, Grady said.

An unidentified male took two masks and a turkey baster from Wal-Mart, and as he fled he knocked over several people, she said.

“It sounds like he was a little late getting ready for Halloween and too early for Thanksgiving,” Grady said.
