TEMPO: 'Clue: The Musical': Behind the scenes

Is it … “ Miss Scarlet, in the billiard room, with the candlestick?”… or … “Colonel Mustard, in the parlor, with the knife?”

Sound familiar? A nudge of nostalgia should be tweaking your memory to happy times spent with family and friends as you played “Clue,” the popular Parker brothers board game. Do you remember the triumphant feeling of satisfaction as you solved the mystery and confidently declared whodunit, in what room, with what weapon?

This enduring game has reinvented itself as a fabulous musical mystery to be presented this Halloween weekend at the Buena Performing Arts Center.

Originally produced in New York, the play had an Off Broadway run in 1997. The book was written by Peter De Pietro and the music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker, and Vinnie Martucci, with lyrics are by Tom Chiodo. The familiar plot concerns the murder of Mr. Boddy. When a detective arrives to solve the case, the audience is enlisted to help discover the identity of the murderer, the location of the dirty deed, and the weapon that was used.

According to director Carrie Duerk, the audience participates much like playing the actual game. Initially, three members of the audience are selected to start the game by building a case file. Each chooses a room card, a weapon card, and a suspect card and places them in the file, creating the possible solutions.

As the investigation proceeds throughout Boddy Manor and the “colorful” suspects come to life, the audience will keep track of clues on game cards that are provided. These cards are collected, and those who have made the correct choices are announced at the end of the play.

By the end of the play, they will have solved the mystery. With more than 200 possible solutions, the cast will be prepared to conclude the play according to the final choice.

The various rooms in the mansion will feature projected images designed by drama student Raymond Pottebaum.

The cast includes Chelsea Brown as Mrs. Peacock, Nathaniel Lacy as Mr. Green, Gina Jurek as Miss Scarlet, T.C. Fair as Col. Mustard, Terrence Taylor as Professor Plum, Victoria Simms as Mrs. White, Ray Pottebaum as Mr. Boddy and Alex Moore as the Detective.

Directed by drama instructor Carrie Duerk and assisted by Miranda Dvorak, Jill Brown is vocal director and Rick Klein will direct the Show Band.

“Clue: The Musical” will be presented at the Buena Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday. A Sunday matinee will be presented at 2 p.m.

Note: There will be no Friday show on Oct. 31.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door before each performance. For the Sunday matinee there will be a “senior special” of 2 for the price of 1 ticket.

" Overall, I think this show would have been stellar but techs running the sound and spots ruined the show for me and others. I am not trying to hate, but give a non-biased review. Actors, you were ok...costumes were ok too, but you need to focus on who runs your sound/lights. Looking forward to the next one. "

" This performance might have been good had the sound been good. Mic's kept going out or did not work or were over modulated...and the spot operators did not know how to spot. It's it that hard ladies?
You could not hear the bass guitar or the guitar and the brass section, which was a bit flat, was drowning out the rhythm section. The actors were pretty good and I think did a fair job, but the production ruined the show and stole the spotlight from their work. "
