Ethel Alleyne Hayden-Lawhead, 75, passed away Sept. 24, 2008, at Quiburi Mission Samaritan Center in Benson, Ariz., after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born on Oct. 3, 1932, to Samuel and Mamie Rowland in St. Clair County, Ill. She returned to Sierra Vista, Ariz., in 1975 after living here from 1968 to 1970.

Ethel was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and volunteered as head of the Money Counters, as church clerk and on the board of directors of First Baptist Christian Academy. She also supported Arizona Baptist Children’s Services.

Ethel traveled the globe with her family as an Army wife, living in France and Okinawa in addition to various American cities and Army posts before settling in Sierra Vista. She was a dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross and was a lifelong blood donor. In Okinawa, she served as president of the Army Officers Wives Club and helped manage the organization’s gift shop there.

Upon returning to Arizona, Ethel worked as a secretary for the U.S. Army for many years and volunteered at the Fort Huachuca Thrift Shop.

More recently, she was active in Water Babies water aerobics, Power from the Past, and was a volunteer at Kartchner Caverns State Park. She also loved playing the piano, gardening, attending monthly Pokeno gatherings with friends and hosting annual Christmas parties.

Ethel is survived by her children, Jane (and Darrel) Claunch of Blanchard, Okla., Ken Hayden of Chandler, Ariz., and Sara Hayden of Portola Valley, Calif.; her sister, Nellie (and George) Reever of Dallas, Texas; her husband, Tony Lawhead of Sierra Vista; and many cherished nieces and nephews throughout the country.

A public memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Sierra Vista First Baptist Church, 1447 S. Seventh St. Colorful attire is encouraged.

Ethel was inspired to participate in the University of Arizona Medical School’s Willed Body Program.

If friends wish, they may make memorial contributions to The Brain Tumor Foundation, Attn: Gift, 1350 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 1200, New York NY 10019, or to First Baptist Christian Academy, 1447 S. Seventh St., Sierra Vista AZ 85635.
