Editor’s note: In the interest of acknowledging the important yet underappreciated role marching bands play in the circus that is high school football, Herald/Review assistant sports editor and eternal band geek Liz Manring is compiling profiles of area band members. Look for these profiles each week.

Age: 16
Year: Junior
Primary instrument: Clarinet
Why did you choose to play that instrument?
When I was little, I saw the Buena band in the Christmas parade. I saw a row of clarinets perfectly in step, and I knew I wanted to be like them.
If you could play an instrument besides the one you play, what would it be?
I would love to be able to play percusison. They can always play beats and get the band to dance.
Name 10 songs on your iPod, iTunes or CD collection:
Beat It by Fall Out Boy
Island in the Sun by Weezer
Wish We Were Older by Metro Station
Stay Young by We the Kings
I’ll Run by The Cab
Not Your Concern by The Hush Sound
The Curse of Curves by Cute Is What We Aim For
I Feel Weird by Steel Train
Nine in the Afternoon by Panic at the Disco
Guilty Pleasure by Cobra Starship
Do you think your school sufficiently supports and appreciates the arts/music?
I think they do what they can, but it is always nice to go and show off what we can do.
What is your favorite pep band tune to play during football season?
Jump On It. It’s a song that everyone knows and the whole band and crowd can start grooving and have fun!
How big of a part does the band play in creating an atmosphere at sporting events?
Even if the team is losing, the band can lift the spirits of the players and the crowd.
Why is it cool to be in marching band?
Some of my most memorable moments have been spent in the band or with people I met through the band. This program gives you a chance to meet amazing people and gain a second family.
