Want high gas prices? Vote Gabrielle Giffords

Published/Last Modified on Saturday, Oct 25, 2008 - 05:23:01 am MST

To the Editor:

She voted to take a five-week vacation instead of working to address the rising cost of gas (Roll Call 537, July 30, 2008).

She blocked voting to allow more refineries, investment in clean energy sources and offshore and ANWR drilling (Roll Call 405, June 12, 2008).

She voted against developing shale oil reserves estimated to hold trillions of barrels of oil (Roll Call 577, June 27, 2007).

She voted for regulations that would raise gas prices (Roll Call 4, Jan. 4, 2007).

She opposed a bill to encourage research to lower gas prices (Roll Call 216, April 23, 2008).

The high price of oil and our dependency on foreign suppliers has created a large ongoing negative balance of trade, large debt to foreign countries and foreign investment in U.S. business and real estate.

Tim Bee understands this and will work to reduce oil imports any way possible.

" Drill here, drill NOW, closer than 50 miles off-shore, oil shale processed into gas, clean coal, natural gas, and nuclear power plants. ALL of these can be done here in the USA by Americans for Americans. Giffords wants us to drill over 50 miles OFF SHORE, a waste of efforts. She claims to be for alternatives but her rhetoric doesn't match her record. She blocked voting to allow more refineries, investment in clean energy sources and offshore and ANWR drilling (Roll Call 405, June 12, 2008).

" IF we had focused on drilling here and NOW back in the 1970s, along with alternatives, we would not be in the situation we now face. Just drilling isn't the complete answer by itself, but it will be part of the solution. Oil shale converted into gas is another great option. AND we have plenty of that in Colorado and the Dakotas. And don't overlook natural gas which we have in tremendous quantities. What is obvious to me is that you opponents are real good at name calling and real bad at thinking! "

" What happens in 20 years when the US runs dry and the only oil left is foreign oil. Drilling here is the dumbest thing in the world. By your choose of candidates it is easy to see how your brain is not connected. We take their oil, but most of the companies are US owned. If the oil conglomerates would come up with alternative solutions like hydrogen and make it reaily available our energy crises would cease to exist. Drilling here only depletes our limited resources silly man. "

" Hmmm, were you even around in the 1970s? Similar situation: High gas prices. Tim Bee understands that we need to drill here and DRILL NOW and that we also need alternatives. We must do everything. We cannot continue sending $700 bn per year to other countries for oil. For you to say gas prices have come down is just plain short-sighted. They have for now. What about another 10 years from now? Drill here, Drill Now and PAY LESS!

" Gas prices have come down and we haven't increased drilling. Why do you want to drill and deplete our resources? That is one of the dumbest ideas I have heard in a long time. We need to do more drilling in Iraq and take their oil. We should deplete their resources before we deplete ours. Only a moron would say "DRILL NOW". Duh! "

" Thank you President Bush for lowering the bar of being a marginal president. For 6 years the Republicans ran Washington, and for the past 2 they did what they could "to gum up the works." Their quote. Now, Republican stooges are posting misleading letters with roll call votes taken out of context. Fortunately, voters have caught on to the misrepresentation - a common RNC ploy. I won't vote Republican as long as they nominate idiots. I'm proud to have a non-ideological representative in Congress. I'll be voting for Gabriel Giffords in 2008. "

" Republicans may talk about lowering prices, but they are spendthrifts beyond comprehension. Amy Strozzi, Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the campaign filing with the FEC. In addition, Angela Lew, who is Ms. Palin’s traveling hair stylist, got $10,000 for “Communications Consulting” in the first half of October. Herbert Hoover and the Republicans brought about the first Great Depression. Borrow and spend Republicans have done their best to start GD II. The choice is clear! "

" Sheer nonsense that a vote for Giffords will raise gas prices. What an idiotic thing to say. All the commentary on the votes above are GOP slanted, naturally. Did your vote for G.W. Bush in 2000 and 2004 raise gas prices? "

Unresponsive Democrats: Barney Frank on the Financial Services Committee - unresponsive to the Fannie Mae mess [for years and years] Christopher Dodd in the Senate - unresponsive to serving the people while getting a "sweetheart" mortgage. Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House - instigated the five-week vacation instead of working to address the rising cost of gas WILL OBAMA or GIFFORDS do the necessary investigations to get to the bottom of this financial mess? NO WAY because they are Democrats who started and purpetuated this mess. "
