Put yourself in the shoes of Annie Kearney-Miller. You hear a young woman cry out. Someone is stabbing her mother.
What do you do?
Or put yourself in the shoes of Sgt. 1st Class Christian Estores. He’s on the phone when a man bursts out of a window and flees the scene of a knife attack that left a woman bleeding inside her home.
What do you do?

Or how about the neighbors who heard the cries for help and went to break down a door to help a woman who they likely didn’t know. Or how about the off-duty Border Patrol agent who helped give first aid to the injured woman.
Would you have done the same?
The scene of Thursday night’s knife attack at a local apartment complex, as described by witnesses and police, is gruesome and horrific. It’s something no one can imagine ever having to witness.
But that’s what neighbors living close together did. And they reacted with thoughts of another person’s well-being, not for their own immediate safety. They reacted to help someone in need.
While there will be a day in court for the man arrested in the case and his innocence or guilt will be decided by a jury, we don’t want to let a shining moment in this dark incident go past.
The neighbors and likely strangers who helped this victim and who helped to save her life during a moment of violence deserve our applause. The good they did and the compassion and care they provided shouldn’t go unnoticed. We thank them today for their deeds.
It also gives all of us a chance to ask ourselves: “What would I have done?”
In Sierra Vista and the surrounding area, we believe there would be many more people who would rush to the aid of someone, and that leaves us with a good feeling about the type of people in this community.
