Bob passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2008 in Tucson, Ariz., his family, Cynthia, Adam and Andrea by his side. Bob also known as “Bobby” to long time friends and his grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron Michael Watters; his father, John Wesley Watters; his mother, Charlotte Watters; and his sister, Wynette (Watters) Hansen. Bob is survived by an extended and loving family: his wife and lifelong best friend, Cynthia Ellen Watters; his daughter, Andrea Elisabeth Watters and granddaughter, Charlotte Ellen Watters; his son, Adam Wesley Watters, daughter-in-law Jill Watters, grandson, Courtland William Watters and granddaughters, Caitlin and Cassandra Watters. He also is survived by his sister, Wanda Margaret (Watters) Ward of Oregon; brother-in-law, Michael Nester of Tucson; nephews, Bruce Hansen of Hawaii, Donald Hansen, Rick Hansen and Randy Ward of Oregon; nieces, Marna Hansen of New Mexico and Darby Randall of Oregon.

Bob was born in Bisbee, Ariz., on Sept. 25, 1939, to John and Charlotte Watters. He graduated from Bisbee High School in 1957. He was a natural athlete and was the state tennis champion in 1957. Following high school he attended the University of Arizona. He enjoyed life immensely and was an avid billiards player and golfer. At one time with a 2 handicap he won many golf tournaments across Arizona and Texas. With memberships at various times at White Mountain Country Club in Pinetop, Ariz.; Oro Valley Country Club, in Tucson; La Paloma Golf Course in Tucson; Hidden Cove Golf Course in Holbrook, Ariz.; Twin Peaks Golf Course in Willcox, Ariz.; Greenlee County Country Club outside Safford, Ariz.; Kearny Golf Course in Kearny, Ariz.; and Richmond Country Club in Texas, he golfed with many friends.

He had a lengthy career in the telephone construction and communications industry. Bob started out climbing telephone poles for Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph and worked his way up to president and owner of his own communications company, SunBelt Communications, which employed over 120 employees and stretched across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and California. In 1984 Sun Belt Communications Inc. installed the telephone system for McDonnell-Douglas, at the time the largest private sale in the United States.

In his retirement, Bob extended a hobby into a small business involving beekeeping and protection from bees. Most recently he played golf in Green Valley, Ariz., and enjoyed being with his friends immensely. And to those Green Valley friends, the family extends their warm thanks for all your support in his last days. He won the President’s Cup several times and was very involved with the various tournaments, especially the Pottinger Golf Group. The Jay Taylor Golf Tournament in the White Mountains was one of his favorites.

He also was a charter member of the Holbrook Elks Lodge #2450 helped establish the Hidden Cove Golf Course in Holbrook, the first golf course in the area. In Willcox, he belonged to the Elks Lodge and participated in the Rex Allen Days festivities every year. He was also a charter member of the Willcox Lion’s Club.

Bob will be missed dearly by his family. He had so many friends, some from childhood days,  high school days and throughout his life. People always wanted to be with him; that sunny smile and tanned face will never be forgotten.

The family would like to express their gratitude to University Medical Center and hospice Casa de Luz for their care. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at Tohono Chul Park in the Wilson Room on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, from 11 am to 3 pm. The park is located 7366 North Paseo del Norte in Tucson. See tohonochul.org for a map.
