JEER: ‘Grandparent’ scam
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is warning senior citizens to beware of telephone calls from someone who claims to be their grandchild and requests money for an urgent situation. The Attorney General’s Office said this scam has been around and has recently arrived in Arizona.
In this scam, the fraud artist calls and poses as a grandchild. The caller may say something like, “Grandma, I am so glad I reached you” or “Grandpa, it’s me, your favorite grandchild calling.” The caller waits for the grandparent to say something like, “Jimmy, is that you?” The caller will agree and state that he or she has either been in a bad accident or is in some type of trouble and needs money immediately.
Grandparents, be careful. Don’t give the caller any clues. Make the caller identify himself. Make sure you know who you are talking to.

What a despicable scam to prey on elderly people in such a way.
CHEER: Judge won’t
kill override vote
On Tuesday morning, Cochise County Superior Court Judge James Conlogue ruled that the Sierra Vista public school district could proceed with a budget override ballot issue on Nov. 4. Two local men, Tony Wenc and Ron Murray, had sued for an injunction to stop the measure on the grounds the district had failed to adopt a budget for 2009-10. Conlogue said the district had followed the law and was not required to adopt the future budget yet.
The judge also said there was an unreasonable delay in the plaintiffs’ filing of the lawsuit.
We are glad this issue can now go to the voters, who are the ones who should decide the fate of this measure for our community.
CHEER: SVRHC marks 45th year
Forty-five years ago this month, this community’s hospital — then known as Western Baptist Osteopathic Hospital — opened for business.
Now known as Sierra Vista Regional Health Center, the hospital has come a long way. It started out with three physicians and 36 staff members.
“Now 45 years, five construction projects, 68 physicians and 800 dedicated staff members later; we are still a health care leader in Southeastern Arizona,” Marie Wurth, the Sierra Vista hospital’s vice president, said during the hospital’s Sapphire Anniversary celebration on Thursday.
Health care is an important asset in the community. We are glad to have Sierra Vista Regional Health Center going strong after 45 years. A quality community deserves a quality hospital.
