Members sought for fort board

SIERRA VISTA — Along with the immediate financial benefits of HB 2495 passing, Fort Huachuca Accommodation Schools are gearing up to see another benefit: a five-person governing board.

Cochise County School Superintendent Trudy Berry and Fort Huachuca Garrison Commander Col. Melissa Sturgeon are accepting letters of interest from people who would like to serve on the governing board, for which each will appoint two members. Those four appointed members will then appoint the fifth.

When HB 2495 passed 52-6 in May, it meant the post accommodation schools could use their heavily-impacted federal funds for operations and maintenance in its budget. This went into effect immediately.

The clause to create a governing board, however, was delayed to require the board be created by January 2009, so the terms would coincide with all the other school board terms, Berry said.

In order to qualify to be on the board, a person must either live or work on post, but cannot be employed by, or related to someone employed by, the accommodation schools.

Berry believes the governing board will be a great for the post schools.

“Even though they’re not elected, they’re still going to represent the constituents on Fort Huachuca,” she said. “I think they deserve more representation at a local level.”

At the moment, Berry, as the Cochise County school superintendent, is the acting governing board for the post schools.

People interested in serving as a school board member must submit a letter of interest to either Berry or Sturgeon by Nov. 1. In the letter, it is requested people describe past experience and affiliations, as well as why they are interested in serving on a school board. Two- and four-year terms are available, so people are also asked to specify which they prefer.

Berry said the letters are being requested early to allow those who are appointed to become educated on policies and procedures prior to beginning their terms.
